Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Sort Of Has Romances, But Players Really Want Eshmel To Get Some Action Published Sep 22, 2026, 9:57 AM EDT For many of us, Fire Emblem Awakening was our introduction to the series and was also the first entry to allow for player avatar and companion romances. The feature returned in Fire Emblem Fates, letting us hook up with other units through an S support. We could get other units to pair up with one another, too, but let's be real, choosing who we were going to romance was the highlight of it all. Alas, that feature has been largely absent in recent games. But with Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave introducing a new player character, Eshmel, there was some hope that this feature would return. So... has it? Even with reviewers blasting through the game already, we're seeing a lot of contradictory statements online. Some say romances are back; others say they're not really enough to call them romances. Players are diving in to find out for themselves, and it seems that the truth lies somewhere in the middle; there is something resembling romance for Eshmel in Fortune's Weave, but it's easy to miss. Does Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave Have Romance? Sort Of, But Don't Get Your Hopes Up For Eshmel So, from what I can see, it really depends on who you have your sights set on. Some characters have paired endings if their support metre is maxed out, and some of those paired endings absolutely come across as romantic in nature. To delve into slight spoiler territory, the name that comes up the most in these conversations is Dietrich. I've seen an ending slide between him and Esmerelda which is absolutely romantic in nature. Our own Ryan Thompson-Bamsay, who reviewed the game, notes that there is something going on between Fabio and Dietrich, particularly in their ending. Some are also reading an ending between Dietrich and Eshmel as romantic, as well as the ending for Hong Hua and Eshmel, but that seems much more open to interpretation. Similarly, our friends over at Polygon found this to be true with Eshmel and Leda. With maxed-out supports, they can get a paired ending, but it is not explicitly romantic. I suppose we can just hallucinate a romantic ending for them instead. With that in mind, it sounds like you'll have more luck if you start to pair up your units with one another, rather than hoping Eshmel gets with any of them. Also, it seems that it very much depends on how the characters feel about each other, and we can't force an actual, clear romance if it's not what the writers had in mind. For instance, one player says that Tialla and Cai's A support is pretty romantic, and there is the aforementioned ending between Dietrich and Esmerelda. To summarise, if you want to "romance" someone as Eshmel, you should max out their supports, and make sure they don't reach a higher support with anyone else. That way, they should get a paired ending, and you can choose to read as much romance into it as you wish. As for shipping pre-made characters with one another, it sounds like there's much more support there. What is clear, however, is that there are a lot of players who yearn for the days of Fire Emblem Awakening. Here, it was easy to see who was romanceable, as they would have S-rank capabilities, and S ranks were always romantic back then. There were an absurd amount of possibilities, which might need to be scaled back as the games now have full voice acting, but damn, the offerings don't need to be as slim as they are now. With that aside, Fortune's Weave is going down ridiculously well with fans. That does make DLC more likely, and who knows? Maybe that will let us hook up with our teammates.
