Ten emergency responders, led by Divisional Officer Tremelle Perch and Station Officer Charmaine Sandiford, arrived aboard two fire tenders from the Worthing and Bridgetown fire stations to find the wooden building already heavily engulfed in flames. Despite the intensity of the inferno, firefighters reportedly mounted an aggressive defence to protect adjacent homes situated just feet away from the burning building. Divisional Officer Perch confirmed that the prompt arrival and tactical response of the crews were vital in preventing a far greater tragedy within the community. Our firefighters did a tremendous job in restricting the fire to that single building, especially considering it was positioned just a few feet away from another neighbouring structure.” The property, which had previously served as a commercial workshop, was being used as a residential dwelling at the time of the incident. A neighbour who identified the elderly man only as ‘Chester’ said he is a former welder and has been the lone occupant of the building for many years. Residents say he usually tends to his nearby garden. Although the building was reduced to ash and rubble, Perch confirmed that the sole occupant managed to escape the burning building unharmed prior to the arrival of the fire tenders. Fire officials refrained from releasing the identity of the occupant, directing further inquiries regarding personal identification to the police force. “Once we arrived, our main priority was to extinguish the flames and ensure the safety of the immediate surrounding area.” The evening incident drew considerable attention from nearby residents and passing motorists along the main thoroughfare leading towards Chancery Lane. Thick plumes of heavy black smoke were visible from a considerable distance as the timber structure and its contents were rapidly consumed by the flames. When Barbados TODAY visited on Thursday, a long-time Hopewell resident was using a garden hose to douse embers that were still smouldering. He said he was relaxing at home when the drama unfolded, describing the alarming moment he was alerted to the unfolding disaster next door. (Photo credit: Ricardo Roberts / Barbados TODAY) “I was watching telly with my wife, and we were discussing our upcoming travel plans, when a neighbour came rushing over shouting that there was a fire next door,” the resident recalled. “Having not seen a fire in this area for as long as I can remember, my immediate thought was sheer dread for the property. I simply got up and went outside to see what was happening.” Stepping out onto the roadway, the neighbour observed a dramatic scene as traffic slowed to a crawl and area residents gathered to watch the firefighting operation under way. “The building was burning with real ferocity, sending massive plumes of black smoke billowing into the night sky,” the eyewitness said. “People in cars were stopping to alert others down the street. It was quite a dramatic thing to witness because whatever was inside that old building just caught and went up instantly.” Reflecting on the evening’s events, the resident expressed sadness at how fast the neighbourhood had changed over the decades, noting that while the community had grown rapidly with new developments extending towards the east, close social ties among neighbours had become less common. “It is quite sad, really,” he said. “You can live somewhere for over twenty years, exchange a quick ‘good morning’, but never truly know the person living right beside you. The old neighbourly spirit that existed when I was a child just does not seem to apply in the same way anymore.” An investigation has been launched to ascertain the cause of the blaze. Firefighters remained on the scene for several hours to cool hotspots, manage smouldering debris, and ensure the surrounding area was fully secured. (RR)
