Final Fantasy Resonance And Nintendo Switch Sports Resort Review Roundup

Final Fantasy Resonance And Switch Sports Resort Reviews Arrive Ahead Of Shared Release Published Oct 20, 2026, 9:38 AM EDT Josh Coulson is an editor at TheGamer covering breaking news on everything from colorful platformers to the latest Lego sets. Primarily a news writer since 2018, Josh has covered just about every major game from the past decade. Now an editor, their focus has shifted to being the leading affiliate expert at the site, building relationships between TheGamer and global brands including Mattel, Funko, and The Pokemon Company. So many big games have been released throughout September and October that there were always going to be a couple of clashes. The next, and the last, of this busy period is just two days away, with Final Fantasy Resonance and Nintendo Switch Sports Resort both releasing on October 22. Turns out the games not only share a release date, but they also share a review embargo. Reviews for Resonance and Switch Sports Resort both started going up at the same time. Neither game has registered aggregate scores that are going to blow 2026's Game of the Year race wide open as we turn the final corner, but both have scored well enough that those eager to play them will now be wishing away the next 48 hours until their combined arrival. Resonance And Switch Sports Resort Rack Up Decent Review Scores Resonance, the first HD-2D game in the Final Fantasy series, currently has an 85 on OpenCritic and an 85 on Metacritic. Not scores that rank it right up there with the likes of Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy 9, two of the highest-scoring games in the series, but that was never expected. It's far from the lowest-scoring FF game ever, though, and based on its reviews, it's going to have everything fans of the series want from its first crack at this popular take on the RPG format. There's a slightly wider disparity between OpenCritic and Metacritic's aggregate scores for Switch Sports Resort. It's sitting at a surprisingly impressive 84 on the former, and a lower 79 on the latter. The upcoming Switch 2 exclusive is certainly a marked improvement on the game that came before it. I reviewed Switch Sports Resort here at TheGamer, awarding it a 3.5/5. What Reviewers Are Saying "The selection of sports is wide and varied, and most of them feel fantastic to play, including the likes of bowling and boxing that have been around since the series' inception, yet still feel great to play," I write in my review, which you can check out in full on the site right now. Nintendo Life's Jim Norman gave Switch Sports Resort a 9/10, writing, "Most of the classics feel better than they've ever been, and the newbies surprise and delight with some classic Nintendo intuition," in their slightly more glowing review. As for Resonance, DualShockers awarded the new Final Fantasy game a perfect score, writing, "While the mainline entries focus on pushing novelty, Final Fantasy Resonance bets on familiarity and years of learned design, delivering an experience that feels comforting yet refreshingly distinct." Dave Aubrey, formerly of TheGamer, gave Resonance three out of a possible five stars, noting in their review for VGC that, "In a world with HD-2D releases of classic Square Enix games and Pixel Remasters of the first six Final Fantasy games, Resonance just isn’t an essential experience."
