First released in 2000, FF9 was the last Final Fantasy game of the PS1 era. It represented a return to form for the franchise, with a traditional medieval fantasy setting and abundant callbacks to the series' earliest days. FF9 has since become one of the most beloved entries in the Final Fantasy series, with many fans clamoring for a proper remake following the conclusion of the FF7 trilogy. While the future of that project remains uncertain, developer Square Enix is putting out some decent FF9 merch later this year. Square Enix Three Final Fantasy 9 music boxes — one each for "A Place to Call Home," "Roses of May," and "(You Are) Not Alone" — are getting a UK release this October. Each of the music boxes goes for £24.99, and pre-orders, now open via the Square Enix online store, are expected to ship out by the end of the month. Each music box plays an iconic tune from Final Fantasy 9: "A Place to Call Home" is perhaps best known as the game's opening sequence/title screen theme. "Roses of May" employs the leitmotif of briefly playable character Beatrix, using the more somber arrangement that plays during her moments of doubt. "Not Alone" is the reggae-tinged piece that plays when the party rallies around Zidane during his identity crisis. The boxes also feature unique art: a crystal resembling the one on FF9's title screen on a black plastic box, Beatrix with her sword surrounded by falling rose petals on a crimson box, and silhouettes of the playable party on a cream-colored box. These FF9 music boxes got a US release over the summer, but are now coming to the UK. They're the latest in a long line of music boxes peddled by Square, which have already featured music from multiple other Final Fantasy games, in addition to the Nier series and Undertale, among others. So, in case FF9 isn't your jam, there are a variety of other music boxes also available via the Square Enix store. You can also pick up "The Crystal Tower" from FF3, the love theme from FF4, "On Our Way" from FF7, or even "Scars of Time" from Chrono Cross. Sure, they may not be the FF9 remake you were hoping for, but these music boxes are a really nice way to relive one of the greatest aspects of the original game: the music. The developers of Final Fantasy, particularly longtime composer Nobuo Uematsu, have always excelled at crafting evocative music, from recurring character themes to eerie dungeon underscoring to stirring battle music. Some of the best and most memorable tracks from your favorite Square Enix games are immortalized in these music boxes, ready to play at a moment's notice. Whether you're a huge Final Fantasy 9 fan or your interests lie elsewhere, there's sure to be a music box to capture your fondest gaming memories.
