Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Isn't Yet Guaranteed A Physical Release

This is despite multiple petitions and people of note in the games industry urging a change of opinion, but Sony seems determined to stick to this plan. That means new games that launch after January 2028 won’t get physical releases, but the silver lining is that at least this means games released between now and then will still have physicals, right? We can still enjoy physical games for a little over a year, right? Unfortunately, even though PlayStation is happy to manufacture discs for games releasing in 2027, not every publisher might be bothered. One of those publishers could be Square Enix, as Final Fantasy 7 Revelation director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed in a new interview (thanks GamesRadar) that the game still isn’t guaranteed to get a physical release at this stage. Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Might Be A Code In A Box “We're still having internal discussions on what the exact SKU product lineup is going to be for Revelation, so I can't say anything particularly definitive at this point in time,” explains Hamaguchi. “But I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition.” While it’s nice that Hamaguchi is pushing for a physical, the phrase “some kind of physical edition” doesn’t exactly fill you with confidence. Grand Theft Auto 6 is still getting a physical edition technically, though it is just a digital download code in a box. It’s possible that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation may do something similar, especially given the game’s size. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s physical edition already needed two discs to be complete, and considering Revelation is going to be even bigger, it’s likely that Square Enix is tossing up the idea of scrapping another two-disc title in favor of a code in a box, especially with Rockstar going down that route with GTA 6 and essentially normalizing the practice. If that’s going to be the case, that’ll be massively disappointing for those that already have Remake and Rebirth on disc. It’ll feel like an incomplete trilogy sitting on our shelves, so here’s hoping Hamaguchi manages to plead his case and get us a physical version of Revelation.
