Final Fantasy 7 Revelation confirms April release date and story DLC

Seven months until the end (Square Enix) An update for Final Fantasy 7 Revelation includes not just a release date and new gameplay, but a special premium edition and promises of story DLC. The one game that was known to be at today’s State of Play was Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which was announced back in June during Summer Game Fest for a spring 2027 release window. It popped up again at Gamescom last month, but not much new was really shown. Turns out that’s because Square Enix was saving a much meatier update for the State of Play despite the game not launching as a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Aside from offering a deeper dive into Final Fantasy 7 Revelation’s gameplay and the new additions to the combat, Square Enix also confirmed a firm release date of April 8 and, more surprisingly, that there will be two story DLC expansions. As shown in previous trailers, Revelation will let you explore the open world via airship, where you’ll need to parasail down to reach your destination. Chocobo mounts return, but you’ll now be able to fight enemies while riding your feathered companions whereas before you had to dismount when a fight began. The new footage also went a little more detail into the new FITS system, which works a bit like a job system from the older Final Fantasy games and allows the party access to new moves. Rather than give every party member unique classes, there are only four to choose from – Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner – though every party member has access to them. Navigating the open world is being expanded upon too. Not only can you play as any character while exploring (so you’re no longer limited to just Cloud), but you have access to a grappling hook to scale rooftops and reach higher areas. Pre-orders are available for the game across PlayStation 5, Xbox, Switch 2, and PC (though digital Switch 2 pre-orders won’t go live till a later date) and if you put money down for it now, you’ll get an exclusive Mecha Chocobo and Moogle summon. There’s also a digital only premium edition that throws in additional in-game equipment and 24 hours early access, but the most intriguing addition is an expansion pass for two story DLC packs. This expansion pass will obviously be made available separately at a later date, but Square Enix has already given away that the first DLC will focus on main villain Sephiroth while the second will be about party member Vincent and his history with the Turks. Final Fantasy 7 Collector's Edition - what's included Square Enix is accepting pre-orders for a Collector’s Edition of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, which is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Switch 2, but it’s only available via the Square Enix store and it’s very expensive at £349.99. If you’re willing to pay that much for it, here is what is included in the edition: Final Fantasy 7 Revelation base game Magic: The Gathering—Final Fantasy Promotional Card Soundtrack Artbook Steelbook Case Statue (Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth) Summoning Materia: Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summoning Materia: Polydroid Alexander Story Expansion Pass Accessory: Reclaimant Choker & Survival Set Accessory: Risk Taker’s Choker Armor: Nymphwing Bracelet Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Story DLC 1: Sephiroth Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Story DLC 2: Vincent & the Turks Final Fantasy 7 Remake only saw one story DLC expansion while Final Fantasy Rebirth didn’t have any story DLC at all, so it’s surprising to see Square Enix promise two expansions for Revelation, especially when the game is meant to wrap up the trilogy. Both expansions will likely be prequels, though, to fill in any gaps in the base game’s story. This wasn’t the only thing Square Enix had to show at the State of Play. There was a new trailer for this year’s Final Fantasy Resonance, which confirmed Sephiroth will feature as a boss fight (no doubt to further promote Revelation) and a demo covering the game’s first chapter will be available from today. At the time of writing, the demo’s only been announced for PlayStation 5, but the full game will be a multiplatform release across Xbox, Switch 1, Switch 2, and PC as well on October 22.
