There's even a new Switch 2 version of FFXIV on the way. So, it might be somewhat of a shock to learn one FFXIV game is shutting down completely later this year. Shutdowns from Square Enix haven't been completely unheard of. Various mobile games, for instance, have been closed this year already with more expected by the end of 2026. That's the case here, since it's been announced that Final Fantasy 14 Mobile, co-developed with Tencent, will be shutting down forever on September 30, 2026. FFXIV Mobile is for the Chinese mainland and hasn't been released globally yet. Now, it looks like that may never happen, since the game is closing its servers in September. "Due to adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment," reads the official statement, "Tencent and Square Enix have, through amicable negotiation, decided to terminate the licensing agreement for FINAL FANTASY XIV MOBILE." The post goes on to list the timetable for when closures begin: 18:00 (UTC+8), July 17, 2026 — In-game top-ups and new user registrations will be suspended. 11:00 (UTC+8), September 30, 2026 — Game operations will officially cease. The game servers and the official website will be shut down, and players will no longer be able to log in. 11:00 (UTC+8), October 15, 2026 — The forums and dedicated customer support will be closed. So, no new users starting today. And anyone who does play FFXIV Mobile will have 76 days to prepare for the services to be terminated. Square Enix hasn't had great luck with its mobile games, so this isn't entirely surprising. Still, considering how popular Final Fantasy 14 is, it is a bit strange that FFXIV Mobile is closing down before it ever had a chance to launch around the world. It's not all bad news, though. The rest of FFXIV on other platforms seems alive and well. In addition to the Switch 2 version in August, a new expansion called Evercold will release for FFXIV next year. New information has been revealed at FFXIV Fan Fest already, and future events should show off even more details regarding the new classes, zones, and raids. Unless you've been playing FFXIV Mobile, you shouldn't be affected by this latest closure for Final Fantasy 14.
