For the uninitiated, Filson is a Seattle-based brand known for its high-quality utility clothing and gear. Established in 1897, Filson predominantly focused on menswear (which Men’s Health has covered extensively) until 2024 when the brand launched a full women’s collection.After receiving so much praise from Men’s Health editors, I wanted to test the brand for myself. I spend most of my time in New York City, so I wasn’t sure how Filson’s pieces would incorporate into my urban wardrobe. But after four months of testing, I understand the hype.When I first got my hands on the Women’s Field Double-Front Pants, I knew they’d be great for hiking, camping, and generally spending time outdoors. Don’t get me wrong, I still occasionally wear leggings on the plane, but sometimes you need to land at your destination and hit the ground running. The Filson Field Pants are versatile and easy to dress up with a sweater or linen button-down if you’re heading straight to dinner.After five trips and hours of travel time, I can confirm the pants are just as comfortable on a hike as they are sitting in a car for hours. A darted waistband, mid-rise, and straight-leg cut create a silhouette that’s flattering and utilitarian. I prefer traveling in cotton because it creates a nice barrier where air can flow between me and the synthetic foams of an airplane or car seat. (Materials like nylon or polyester tend to make me sweat).While the reinforced leg fronts are great for added durability and protection, they can get a little warm in the summer humidity, so keep that in mind if you’re taking a beach vacation. Luckily, I haven’t had much of a problem with overheating since long travel days tend to be spent in air conditioning. Although the Field Pants have minimal stretch because they are made from 100 percent cotton, the straight-leg construction provides plenty of room for movement.VersatilityPerhaps my favorite thing about these pants is their many use cases. When I’m wearing them on the plane, I know that they’re not just going to take up room in my suitcase for the rest of the trip. Whether I’m biking in Copenhagen, hiking in Minnesota, or dining out in Seattle, the Field Pants can be styled to fit every vibe and scenario.The mid-weight cotton stays wrinkle-free, and I don’t feel the need to wash them after every wear the way I do with activewear.
