Fierce criticism as it emerges rapist cop was PROMOTED after sex attack allegations

A rapist police officer was promoted after his arrest for an alleged attack on a woman, it has emerged.Campbell Petrie, 50, carried out a string of sex crimes including rape during his 16-year reign of terror.He was convicted of a total of nine charges involving physical and sexual abuse of two women between 2006 and 2022.It has now emerged Petrie, who had worked undercover, kept his job after being arrested in 2009 and retired last year following his second arrest for the offences which led to his conviction this week.The case sparked fierce criticism of Police Scotland over vetting standards following the earlier case of rapist police officer Alan Greer, who took his own life in May.Scottish Tory justice spokesman Stephen Kerr said: ‘Two former Police Scotland officers; two appalling cases.‘The public are entitled to ask whether Police Scotland has properly learned the lessons from these failures.‘The central question is what was known, when it was known, and why action was not taken sooner. Campbell Petrie, 50, carried out a string of sex crimes during his 17-year reign of terror‘With the Alan Greer probe ongoing, the promised independent review must expose the full truth and establish whether there are wider failings within the force.‘Anything less will look like an institution protecting itself rather than confronting its failures.’Scottish Labour justice spokesman Pauline McNeill said: ‘These are reprehensible crimes, and it is right that any and all allegations within Police Scotland are fully investigated.’Sickening details of Petrie’s crimes emerged at his trial at the High Court in Glasgow, including the disclosure that he targeted one of his victims while she slept.Petrie – who told the court he was promoted to the rank of sergeant in 2022 – had denied the accusations, claiming he had been left ‘absolutely humiliated’.Jurors heard how he got to know one victim because they both worked for police.He described her as a ‘bit starry eyed’ – but she was ‘pretty’ and ‘out of his league’.Petrie, of Muirend, Glasgow, discovered she was ‘interested’ in him which he said was an ‘ego boost’ adding he was ‘more flattered than anything else’ given the age gap.Jurors heard it was ‘all very pleasant’ initially between them when they got together.But the woman told the court: ‘He did not like me working with men.’Keep-fit fanatic Campbell started making weight jibes and tried to get the woman to stand on scales.He was also said to have raked through bins to check on what she had eaten.The woman recalled that he warned he would harm her if she ever left him.But Petrie claimed: ‘I would certainly not make threats to kill anyone.’He also tried to ban her from going on social media and made her lose contact with friends.Among other incidents – which included physical assaults – were Petrie hounding her at a friend’s home despite being warned not to come near.Prosecutors branded this incident ‘sinister’ as he loitered at the back of the property in the dark.Defence KC Edith Forrest quizzed him on sexual allegations made by this woman.This included testimony that he raped her in the changing rooms of a leisure centre in Lanarkshire.Petrie previously took advantage of the woman at a flat in the south side of Glasgow in 2011 by having sex with her after she had been drinking and was unable to consent.The other woman who earlier suffered at his hands accused Petrie of ‘lovebombing’ her after they met in a queue in a Tesco supermarket in Glasgow’s Springburn area while he was on shift. Police officer Alan Greer took his own life in May after being arrested for sex attacksHe had ‘immediately found her quite attractive’.She later came to see him at the city’s Baird Street station and they remained in contact.Despite all going well initially, the officer soon changed and started calling her names like ‘fat cow’ and ‘s***’.The woman said: ‘He wanted me to be a skinny blonde.’The court heard he lost his temper in a bar in the city’s west end, dragged her out having earlier hit a man.The trial also heard evidence of a drunken Petrie being aggressive with the woman after a party.He denied putting his hands around her throat.Petrie was initially arrested in around 2009 following allegations made by this woman.Police colleagues turned up at his door and he was held in a cell for up to five hours before eventually being released.It is not yet known why he was not prosecuted at the time.He remained in the force and was promoted before being arrested again in December 2023.Petrie retired from Police Scotland in December 2025 and had latterly been working in a friend’s sports shop.He was convicted of nine charges, including two rapes of separate women.The disgraced officer was also found guilty of indecent assault, assault with intent to rape and assault to injury and danger of life.The offences took place between 2006 and 2022.After the verdicts, judge Alistair Watson told Petrie that the ‘gravity of the crimes committed cannot be overstated’. Scottish Tory justice spokesman Stephen KerrPetrie had been on bail but was remanded in custody as sentencing was deferred until next month.The rapist winked and waved to family in the public benches as he was led to the cells following his conviction on Tuesday.Sources told the Scottish Sun that the Scottish Police Authority (SPA) may be asked to remove the publicly contributed part of his pension.The Mail revealed earlier this week that an independent review into the case of Greer, who was dubbed ‘Scotland’s Wayne Couzens’, may never be published in full.Greer, 47, took his own life in May after being arrested for sex attacks that he carried out over a period of at least 14 years.Justice Secretary Neil Gray said: 'This is an extremely disturbing case and my thoughts are with the victims.'The vast majority of police officers carry out their duties with professionalism and integrity every day, earning the trust that communities place in them. For any officer to abuse that position of trust is abhorrent.'Police officers are rightly expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, which is why we have strengthened vetting through legislation and Police Scotland have been clear there is an ongoing programme of work to re-vet all officers.'
