That was the case for 2024's Dawntrail expansion, which had the unenviable task of being the first part of the MMORPG's new arc. One major criticism from players fell on the story's pacing, which could admittedly be all over the place. For Evercold, the next expansion, Square Enix is making it a point to fix this. Square Enix finally revealed during Tokyo Fan Fest over the weekend that Evercold will be released on Feb. 23, 2027. That's a slight delay from the original January release window. During Fan Fest, part of the FFXIV subreddit's mod team got a chance to interview director Naoki Yoshida (also known as Yoshi-P). When asked if there was any specific thing the team learned from Dawntrail that was important for Evercold's development, Yoshida responded that, "this time we are putting in serious consideration on the sense of tempo." He explained further that the issue in Dawntrail was that the story included a number of new lands and cultures that "the main questline devoted too much time to fleshing out, while players wanted to "keep moving forward." In response, Evercold has moved a number of world-building elements from the main scenario quest to side quests so that "players can enjoy them at their own pace after." Yoshida added that this also feeds into the team's general desire to be more considerate of players' time. While the criticism of Dawntrail is understandable to an extent, there is concern that this could overcorrect the problem. Much of what makes Final Fantasy 14 so great is its extensive storytelling over hundreds of hours. Trying to speed things up and push important narrative elements to the side risks losing some of the game's special sauce. Yoshi-P's advice on what to play before Final Fantasy 14 Evercold Image: Square Enix Ahead of Evercold's release, the mod team also asked Yoshida if there were any specific quest lines players should revisit. Unlike in the past, his answer was fairly broad and vague, suggesting players refamiliarize themselves with the shards and the origin of how the universe was split. Considering that it is a central story element throughout the game, it is hard to know where to start. Players could very well decide to replay all of Shadowbringers and Endwalker or even parts of Heavensward. If you don't want to go back and play all that, then here's a short refresher. Final Fantasy 14's universe was originally a single world. In the ongoing battle between Hydaelyn and Zodiark, essentially gods, the world was split into fourteen shards. The Warrior of Light has spent much of Final Fantasy 14 dealing with Zodiark and learning about the original world. We've even visited a number of other shards in the past. So all you really need to know is that Evercold will take the Warrior of Light to yet another alternate world with its own problems.
