Sonam Wangchuk, in a handwritten note to Safdarjung Hospital, said he was feeling 'very fine' and that his health parameters were normal, urging the authorities to allow him to leave so he could join the CJP's Parliament march.Sonam Wangchuk at protest site in Jantar Mantar before being moved to Safdarjung Hospital. (Photo: PTI)Activist Sonam Wangchuk on Monday wrote to the Safdarjung Hospital authorities, saying he was feeling "very fine" and requesting permission to leave the hospital, even if temporarily, so that he could participate in the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)'s 'Sansad Chalo' march to Parliament. In a handwritten letter addressed to the Director of Safdarjung Hospital -- where he has been admitted since July 18 after being shifted from Jantar Mantar on the 21st day of his fast --, Wangchuk said his health parameters were normal and urged the authorities to allow him to join the protest."This is to state that I am feeling very fine today and my health parameters are also showing as quite normal. Hence, I request you to kindly allow me to leave the hospital, even if temporarily, so that I can join the March to the Parliament, Sansad Chalo this morning," Wangchuk wrote."I shall be most grateful," he added. Sharing the note on social media, he questioned why restrictions had been placed on his movement if the police maintained that the activist had not been detained."Sonam Wangchuk is trying hard to see you all! Just submitted a letter to the hospital as his health is good and they claim he is not in detention. So why the restrictions?" a message on his X handle read. The letter comes just after the Safdarjung Hospital authorities said, in a medical update, that Wangchuk's vital parameters are stable, adding that his blood parameters require close clinical observation."Sonam Wangchuk continues to receive comprehensive medical care at VMMC & Safdarjung Hospital. His vital parameters remain stable. Blood parameters continue to warrant close clinical observation. Wangchuk remains under continuous medical management and the close supervision of a multidisciplinary team of experts," the latest health bulletin said. The letter also comes amid a standoff over Wangchuk's continued stay at the government hospital. His wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, has alleged that even family members are not being allowed to meet the activist, claiming that he has been kept under police custody-like restrictions.Earlier in the day, Angmo moved the Delhi High Court challenging an order that she declined to intervene in his treatment at Safdarjung Hospital. In her appeal, she argued that the order effectively keeps Wangchuk confined to the hospital without any formal arrest and deprives both him and his family of decisive authority over his medical treatment. The Delhi High Court agreed to hear the matter and is scheduled to take up the plea later in the day.Hundreds of thousands of protesters have gathered at Jantar Mantar and nearby areas to join the CJP's protest demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and greater accountability over the exam controversy.Tension flared at Jantar Mantar earlier in the day after protesters breached police barricades, prompting security personnel to resort to a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. The national capital has been placed under heavy security, with over 5,000 personnel, anti-riot units, water cannons, and other crowd-control measures deployed. Five Metro stations have also been closed ahead of the march, which coincides with the opening day of Parliament's Monsoon Session.- EndsPublished By: Devika BhattacharyaPublished On: Jul 20, 2026 11:49 IST
