Federal government to spend $30 million to ‘fertility control’ wild horse populations out West

The federal government is investing $30 million in fertility control aimed at addressing the growing population of wild horses out west.The horses, which are largely situated in Nevada, have a population growth of 15 to 20 percent annually. However, due to drought conditions from increasingly hot summers the landscape is unable to sustain the escalating numbers.The animals, struggling to maintain weight and becoming dehydrated, are forced to travel long distances to eat and drink which is creating a wildlife crisis. To address this, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are working to reduce the horse population in order to ensure that future herds do not have to compete as much for resources. The organisation was also criticised previously for corralling the animals using helicopters. Democratic Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus is calling for an end to the use of helicopters in such roundups, and is one of 18 members of Congress calling for an investigation into the slaughterhouse claims. “It’s long past time to fix the ongoing failures in how America’s wild horses are managed,” Titus said, per 8NewsNow. “For years, across both Republican and Democrat administrations, we’ve seen alarming reports of hostility toward these animals and serious questions about how the Bureau of Land Management is carrying out its responsibilities.”The bureau has said: “Federal law prohibits the commercial slaughter of these animals, and the BLM does not sell or send wild horses or burros to slaughter.” The agency did not detail future plans to reduce drought in the area. The Trump administration has been working to rebuild the coal mining industry and to remove environmental protections put in place by previous presidents.
