FBI Arrests GTA Leaks Suspect Behind Rockstar Hack

Writing serves as a much-needed distraction from tackling a backlog of Steam games that will never be surmounted. Sign in to your ScreenRant account Rockstar Games has been subject to plenty of leaks in recent years, with one of the biggest happening in April 2026. The group ShinyHunters shared a wide array of Rockstar's confidential financial information online, divulging details about just how much the company makes from Grand Theft Auto Online and other sources of income. ShinyHunters has been operating in a particularly brazen way as of late, divulging the Rockstar Games information after publicly setting a ransom that Rockstar chose not to pay. More recently, the group targeted the FBI itself, establishing that it had obtained personal FBI data and initially threatening to share it unless the FBI walked back a public advisory about the hacking group's activities. Later, ShinyHunters backed off, announcing that it would not share the data regardless. Now, the FBI has arrested a suspect connected to ShinyHunters, as reported by The New York Times. The suspect is a Canadian citizen "considered to be a primary co-conspirator in carrying out the intrusion." While there's no confirmation that the individual in question was also involved in the Rockstar Games hack, taking a key role in ShinyHunters activities makes it seem likely that he could have been involved in that crime as well. More broadly, the FBI is intent on dismantling ShinyHunters, with director Kash Patel promising to "disrupt what's left of the ShinyHunters group and their associates." Patel's remarks come amid plenty of public scrutiny of the FBI itself, which has publicly embraced a more partisan bent under his leadership. Meanwhile, Rockstar Games has other, more recent leaks to worry about. An individual known as Cyberleek has been sharing significant clips of gameplay from what appears to be an earlier build of the game, offering plenty of new details about combat and story that haven't been shown in any official Rockstar marketing material. Even in the worst case scenario, Rockstar won't have to worry about leaks for too much longer. Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to release on November 19, after which most of the company's biggest secrets should be out of the bag. There's still more to learn about plans for the game's inevitable online component, along with any other projects in development at Rockstar, but the release of the campaign will be a big step forward. As for ShinyHunters, time will tell whether the group attempts any more aggressive plans in the near future. This is far from the first arrest connected to the group, but its multinational nature could make it hard to track down and arrest every individual with a significant role to play. Rockstar Games might be content to sit back and let the FBI do the work, as the studio has plenty more on its plate to worry about.
