The genre has become harder than ever to break into, with plenty of high-profile attempts burning out quickly. However, older staples like World of Warcraft have shown there is still plenty of appetite for massive games like this. One good modern example of that is Where Winds Meet. Developed by Everstone Studio and published by NetEase, the game is a Wuxia-inspired third-person MMORPG that places players in the role of the Wander. With an emphasis on combat and exploration amid gorgeously rendered settings, Where Winds Meet boasts truly awe-inspiring scale. Where Winds Meet is approaching its one-year anniversary, with global expansions that reflect the growing scope of the world and setting. In a chat with ScreenRant, the team behind Where Winds Meet reflects on how Chinese culture and history influence the game, even as it takes cues from a global audience. Finding The Wuxia In Yourself What makes Where Winds Meet so compelling in moment-to-moment gameplay is its cinematic approach. Everything in the game feels bigger than life, whether that be simply exploring a new location or taking on a master swordsman in a duel to the death. The Wuxia-inspired settings benefit from that scale and scope, turning what could be simple encounters into thrilling battles. The importance of that approach was evident during our chat about Where Winds Meet, where the team noted that the Wuxia influence was key on every level of development. "We aim to offer different experiences for different areas," the team explained, while also quickly noting that this can come to fruition in all sorts of different ways and mechanics. "We have implemented it into a lot of our design process. For example, Qinghe. We wanted to showcase the Wuxia's spirit of chivalry, so we wanted to create this kind of environment. Kaifeng, however, is a historical city, so it shows different styles. We have some fantasy literature inspirations too." The Hidden Mountain is a new area launched in the global version, and we combined it with traditional philosophy and engineering mechanisms. For each region, we'd like to showcase a different subject, and because the traditions are different, it all felt different. In some other areas, we had a two-dimensional exploration route, but for Hidden Mountain we actually made it three-dimensional." According to the team, whether it be in the way the game approaches combat, storytelling, or exploration, "what we're trying to do is to combine the content with our core ideology. For Hidden Mountain, the main subject is interconnectivity, and that has something to do with the traditional philosophy of universal love. It all impacts how we make the game." That comes across in the gameplay, where high-flying battles and epic escapes are the norm. The creativity of the scenes and the challenge of the combat keep players engaged, though, preventing it from all just feeling like spectacle without substance. It's a tricky balancing act but one that Everstone Studio accomplishes. How Where Winds Meet Explains For Global Audiences It's been less than a year since Where Winds Meet debuted on the global stage, quickly racking up a lot of attention for its visuals and scale. All of that attention also comes with a certain level of natural scrutiny. "We're still constantly learning from our global community," the team noted, explaining that their approach to expanding the material for the game is dependent on hearing from players all over the world. "How do we adjust our operational plan or update cadence? It changes. One example we launched the Imperial Palace earlier [in western markets] than for the Chinese servers. We want to constantly optimize our infrastructures." That vote of confidence is a big swing for the China-based company, which infuses a cultural identity into the game. That means the translations for other versions can be tricky. We want to help introduce players to Wuxia with Where Winds Meet. That means the team takes explicit care to make sure that the game is engaging to players from all walks of life. "In terms of localization, there's actually a vast amount of text and content. We hope that the localization quality is not going to be a barrier for our global players, but will still help them understand the game and the world... we want to help introduce players to Wuxia with Where Winds Meet. That's why we have constant communication with fans, so that we can have mutual growth together. "We understand that for different regions, there are different preferences. It's about combining [our approach] with all those experiences. We hope this diverse community can give us some feedback and that we can improve upon the base game. We want to continuously offer exciting content to our players around the world, and we have plenty more to come in the future." There's a long road ahead for Where Winds Meet, and the team is more than happy to go along for the ride.
