Fans baffled as English football icon pops up at the unveiling of new Prime Minister Andy Burnham

FOOTBALL fans were left baffled after spotting an English football icon at the unveiling of the UK’s new Prime Minister. Former Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham was sworn into office at Downing Street on Monday as he replaced Sir Keir Starmer. Reid, 70, won the Division One title twice with Everton in the 1980s, while also achieving glory with the Toffees by lifting the 1984 FA Cup and 1985 European Cup Winners’ Cup. The former defensive midfielder was also capped by England 13 times and starred at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. Following his playing career, Reid moved into management, which included an exemplary stint as Sunderland boss between 1995 and 2002 as he won the First Division – now the Championship – twice with the Black Cats. While in the Premier League, he also won the Manager of the Month award twice as he guided a Kevin Phillips-led Sunderland side to competing for a place in European competitions. Speaking to Sky about his appearance at Burnham’s unveiling, he revealed the four-word message he gave to his fellow Evertonian. He said: “He’s been a pal of mine for a long time, it was good to see his family there as well. I must have forget for a minute.” Reid added that he heard a message of unity coming from Burnham’s first speech in front of No10. He also starred for the likes of Bolton, Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers while later enjoying a managerial career encompassing coaching roles as Man City, Leeds, Coventry, Plymouth and Thailand manager.
