Fan-Made Oblivion Remake Skyblivion Sued By Former Volunteer

"After they left the project, we had several discussions regarding the continued use and maintenance of his work," the team said. "The main disagreement centered on their objection to our decompilation of parts of their work—a necessary step our team took to maintain functionality and fix issues in systems already built into the project after access to the original source code repository was revoked. "Ultimately, despite us trying to work out the disagreement, they escalated to sending legal threats, which included demands for the real names and home addresses of our volunteer team leads, something we couldn't accept and think is disproportionate. A 'take your ball and go home' approach like this fundamentally contradicts the collaborative, open spirit of the modding community that makes massive passion projects like this possible." Legal Threats Continue Even After Skyblivion Removes Former Volunteer's Code To protect its team, Skyblivion scrubbed the former volunteer's work and started rebuilding their systems from scratch. But even with the code gone, the threats haven't stopped. "We had zero interest in holding onto friction or fighting a former team member," the team explained. "To protect our volunteers from undue stress and ensure a clean break, in good faith we removed their code, rebuilding and improving the system from the ground up. Even so, they have continued to intensify their threats." It’s a massive drag for a non-profit mod that has already spent over ten years in development, but the team is asking fans not to turn the situation into a witch-hunt. "Despite what may continue to escalate behind-the-scenes, we do wish for the very best for this former volunteer and hope we can get this resolved as soon as possible and get on with our planned release of Skyblivion," the statement concludes. Skyblivion was originally targeting a late 2025 release before slipping into 2026. With the year coming to a close and no concrete release date in sight, having to rebuild code from scratch while navigating a potential lawsuit certainly doesn't help speed things along. Still, the team assures fans that they're "hard at work finishing up" and promised more updates on the release date soon.
