The World Cup has been awesome. Not only have the games themselves entertained even the most staunch anti-soccer Americans, but the camaraderie of fans across the planet has been a breath of fresh air compared to the vitriol that all too often floods our social media timeline while we sit at home alone. One of the most remarkable accounts to follow in his journey around the United States has been a guy named Freddy, and now he is soaking up what Lexington has to offer. If you don’t know, Freddy is an anonymous German fan visiting the United States for the first time. His upbeat perspective about fabulous American mainstays such as the Waffle House and Buc-ee’s has made his account go viral, with over 760,000 followers on X and 130,000 followers on Instagram. His boon in popularity has garnered borderline royal treatment wherever he goes, including private NASA tours, stays paid for by Gordon Ramsay, and backstage access with country singer Ella Langley. One of the things that makes Freddy mysterious is that he obscures his face in photos with an image of Cristiano Ronaldo. Freddy’s trip to Kentucky Freddy drove up from Tennessee to the Bluegrass State on Saturday and made his first stop at Mammoth Cave. As you would expect, his tweet about it included the mind-blown emoji. Currently inside Mamooth Cave in Kentucky. It‘s the longest known cave system in the world (more than 430 miles). That’s more than 1.5× longer than the second-longest cave system.🤯 pic.twitter.com/3WwOR31B2P— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 18, 2026 From there, he met up with KSR photographer Aaron Perkins for a behind-the-scenes exclusive tour of Keeneland. He got to see horses in the stables and walk all over the grounds. No races were happening, of course, but the social media star vowed to return on a race day for the full experience. Our second stop in Kentucky. We were told that Kentucky is all about horse racing, so we went to Keeneland Racecourse and visited some of the horses. They sell for insane prices. It’s a sport we didn’t know anything about, but after talking to the people who showed us around and… pic.twitter.com/vUJjPkeNt3— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 18, 2026 People go viral for the weirdest reasons, but there’s something heartwarming about gaining hundreds of thousands of followers by being genuinely awestricken by things so many Americans take for granted. Freddy recounted that people have been telling him to stop eating at fast-food chains in favor of local restaurants. Armed with a gift card Perkins gifted him, his crew stopped at Winchell’s Diner, a Lexington staple. Thankfully, horse racing was on TV, and a German soccer scarf was on the wall. A lot of people told us we should stop eating only at fast food chains, so we have tried to more eat local spots during the last days. This was our dinner today in Lexington, Kentucky. It’s also where we’re staying tonight.😊 pic.twitter.com/hCopgJroZj— Freddy🇩🇪 (@FreddyLA7) July 19, 2026 It is amazing how so many people from around the world can take such extended periods off from work for world travel. I’m jealous. But even more amazing is how the World Cup has shown that most of us would all get along really well if not for the political dealings of our heads of state. It’s like we are all cousins having a blast playing with each other outside at a family reunion, even though our parents are inside having beef with our aunts and uncles for whatever reason we don’t understand. If Freddy, or any small group of World Cup tourists, were visiting your hometown, where would you take them? Got thoughts?
