Family of newlywed, 26, killed in boat crash demand cops investigate after ‘serious argument’ with husband night before

THE family of a pregnant newlywed who was killed in a Venice boat crash has demanded a police probe, saying “some things don’t add up”. Gabriella Querino, 26, and her husband Sean Michieli, 25, smashed into a five-tonne water taxi the morning after they allegedly had a “serious argument”. Sean has been in a coma since the horror crash, while Gabriella’s body was found over a mile from the impact site three days later. Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! The 38-year-old canal cab driver involved, a stand-in who allegedly did not have a boat licence, is being investigated for negligent homicide. Police said the injuries found on Gabriella’s body were consistent with an accident, and they are awaiting autopsy results. But her family has called on police to investigate further because they say some things “don’t add up”. Gabriella’s sister, Marieduarda, and cousin, Emily, told Il Giornale that the newlyweds had a heated row on September 11, the day before the crash. They said: “She packed her suitcase and wanted to leave.” Hours later, Gabriella texted her mum, Gisele, to tell her that they had made up and were going out for dinner. They said: “She video-called every day, no matter what happened. She hated communicating via texts, she never did. “That’s why it’s strange to us that she didn’t respond to her mother all afternoon and then only contacted her later, with two messages.” It’s still unclear whether their argument contributed to the crash. The couple reportedly set off from the picturesque island of Burano to catch bait for Sean’s work at 5am on September 12. They collided with the taxi before sunrise on a canal linking Marco Polo Airport and Tessera. The driver later told investigators he did not see any other boat before the crash. Cops have since pulled the couple’s sunken ship from the canal and are examining it to work out the details of the crash. Her mum told Brazilian media: “She was building a life for herself over there, and she was happy.” For Sean’s family, the crash is the second tragedy that unfolded in the same waters where they have earned their living for generations, according to local media. In 2007, Sean’s uncle Endrius, then 19, died in a crash between his small boat and a small fuel barge. The incident happened near the Fondamente Nove, opposite the island of San Michele. Authorities are still trying to piece together the sequence of events on Saturday, and the cause of the crash remains unclear. Comment now
