Fairfield woman arrested after 2 dogs padlocked in storage shed in 100 degree heat

Krystal Lee Spillers, 32, is charged with cruelty to animals, according to court records made public Friday. The investigation began Sept. 14 when Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies were searching a property on 59th Street South in Fairfield and heard the sound of dogs barking coming from a shed on the property. The deputy noticed the shed was secured with two padlocks. When authorities asked Spillers why the dogs were locked inside the shed, according to the criminal complaint, she told them that a friend had moved out and left the dogs in the shed. She said they had been in the shed about four days at that point. She said she didn’t know if they had been given food or water during that time.Authorities removed the padlocks and found two small dogs inside without access to food or water. The shed was not insulated and the conditions inside were consistent with the extreme outdoor temperatures, according to the complaint. Spillers was booked into the Jefferson County Jail on Monday and released on bond the following day.
