Fact Check: This video DOES NOT show Hindu houses being torched in Bangladesh

A video of a burning hut in the middle of a wooded area has been widely shared online as anti-Hindu violence in Bangladesh. In the video, three women can be seen standing at a distance.One person could be heard saying in Bangla, “It is midnight right now, and people from our own area have set our house on fire. What kind of conspiracy is being hatched against us?” The X account Kreately shared the video and wrote, “Hindu houses burned by Islamists in Bangladesh. Why is India silent?”India Today Fact Check found that the house belonged to the Bangladeshi Muslim sisters Asma and Najma Akter. They confirmed that there was no communal angle to the incident. OUR PROBEReverse-searching the video’s frames led us to the TikTok account of Asma Akter, who posted the clip on July 4. We then found her Facebook account, where she had posted other videos of the same house in flames the same day. Through that, we came across her Instagram account, where she shared videos of the aftermath of the fire on July 5. Here, we can see a burnt-down structure and ashes.India Today Fact Check reached out to Asma. She said that she and her sisters Najma and Tanjina are content creators from Khagrachari district in Bangladesh’s Chittagong division. She confirmed that the viral video showed their house burning. She claimed that some people in the area torched the house out of enmity. When we told her what the viral claim was, she said that she and her sisters are Muslim and rubbished any communal angle behind the incident.Asma also sent us a photo of her house before it was torched.
