Fact Check: Did Trump say he's in talks with India to use EVMs in US polls?

A screenshot of an August 18 Truth Social post allegedly by Donald Trump is being shared on social media. In it, the US President purportedly said that he just got off a call with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, adding, “We are in serious talks about bringing India's world-class EVM system to America for the 2028 Election. These machines are unbeatable, fast, and 100 per cent secure. No more mail-in ballots, no more chaos, no more RIGGED elections.”An X user shared the screenshot and wrote, “Never thought of a day when America will be looking towards India to secure our technology for their electoral process. Elections in India are conducted through EVMs, and India also customise it for other nations. USA trusting Indian EVMs is such good news for our democracy.”India Today Fact Check found that the viral post is fake. Trump praised India’s election system, but did not talk about using EVMs in the 2028 US presidential election. OUR PROBEWe searched for recent reports about Trump being in talks with India to use EVMs in the 2028 US presidential elections, but found nothing credible. Had this been the case, the international media would have reported it.We searched for the viral post on Trump’s Truth Social account but did not find it. However, we did find an August 18 post where Trump talked about how Gyanesh Kumar expressed astonishment at the US conducting elections without identity cards bearing a photo of the voters. He praised the Indian Election system and also talked about the “The SAVE America Act.” This post makes no mention of EVMs or using them in the 2028 US presidential election. We also checked Trump’s X and Facebook accounts but did not find any such statement on EVMs in the US election. We also did not find anything of that sort on the X accounts of the White House, the US Embassy in India, and the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor.TRUMP'S TAKE ON ELECTRONIC VOTINGIn August 2025, Trump said that he would lead a “movement” to eliminate mail-in ballots and voting machines. Supporters of the bill argue it will prevent voting fraud by preventing non-citizens from voting. Critics say that it would affect eligible voters who do not have passports, birth certificates, or other accepted documents readily available.
