Talarico called women “our neighbors with uteruses,” and said that there are six sexes. He argued during a legislative hearing that “denying a child’s gender identity” — that is, insisting your son is actually a boy — “is abusive for sure.” He said white people, simply by being white in public, spread the virus of racism. So how in the world does Talarico have a chance to win a U.S. Senate race in Texas? Because Republicans there nominated a corrupt philanderer who was impeached by his own party for bribery and using the office of attorney general to investigate the rivals of a donor. The state House also alleged that Ken Paxton’s donor, as a favor, hired Paxton’s mistress.Democratic candidate for US Senate James Talarico and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. (Photos by Ronaldo Schemidt and Mandel Ngan / AFP via Getty Images) Even if Paxton beats Talarico on Nov. 3, he will have used up hundreds of millions of Republican dollars in a state that incumbent Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) would have won easily, had Paxton not, with the support of President Donald Trump, defeated Cornyn in the GOP primary earlier this year.Texas, in this way, is a microcosm of the nation: The Trump Republican Party is so corrupt and morally depraved that it is handing victories to extremist Democrats. It’s not that most of the Republican governor, Senate, or congressional nominees are corrupt or depraved. It’s the party as a whole that is corrupt and depraved, and Republican governance is failing at the national level.Starting with the thrice-married, serially unfaithful president who has spent his second term using his power to enrich himself and his family, and going down through his cabinet and inner circle, the Republicans are, in 2026, more morally depraved than even the Democrats.Trump literally sells access to whoever will give enough money to him personally — not his campaign donors, but those who enrich him personally by buying his fake currency. He pardons his friends. His son takes favors from Russian oligarchs. Every week comes a Trump corruption story that would have brought down any pre-Trump president. And aside from the corruption, just consider his narcissism and self-obsession. While inflation is still too high and gasoline prices are brutal, thanks to his ill-advised, unauthorized war in Iran, Trump is raving on social media like a mad king.Trump attacks the Wall Street Journal for calling artificial intelligence “artificial intelligence” (which he dislikes, it seems, based on his misunderstanding of the word “artificial”) instead of adopting his own preferred “super intelligence.”Trump rails against Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) because Cotton opposes Trump’s latest obsession: Abolishing standard time and moving the whole country to permanent Daylight Saving Time. (This petty-king move was also, tellingly, a priority of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.)With the governing party so busy wetting their beaks and tinkering with clocks, the Democrats are able to avoid adequate scrutiny. The most important campaign proxy for Abdul el Sayed, the Democratic Senate nominee in Michigan, is the pro-terrorism, anti-American influencer named Hasan Piker. The Democrats’ nominee in Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan, likes to sport a T-shirt calling for violence against those who dissent from her state’s left-wing dogma on transgenderism.Meanwhile, the center of power in the Democratic Party is drifting towards the Democratic Socialists of America, who march under Palestinian and transgender pride flags. Yet thanks to the Republican Party they are running against, these radicals look to be marching to victory. All of this is so much more lamentable because at the local and state level, Republicans have shown themselves to be much better than the Democrats at governing. Consider the thriving economies of Florida and Texas, and the surging schools of Mississippi and Alabama. Then compare these to the incompetence of the District of Columbia, the crime of New York’s subways, and the population loss of blue states everywhere.DEMOCRATS CAUGHT IN ALASKA ‘DECOY DAN’ LIE Because so many Democrats have held onto the radical extremism of wokeism while tacking on support of Hamas, this should be a good year for Republicans. Thanks to Trumpian corruption and perversity, it won’t be. Which means it will be a bad few years for the republic.
