THE exact date a new supermarket drinks rule will come into force across the UK has been revealed. Shoppers who buy fizzy drinks or bottled water could be affected by the move. The deposit return scheme is set to roll out across the UK Credit: AFP The Deposit Return Scheme is due to come into force on Friday, October 1 2027, according to Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. It will see a 20p deposit applied to all single-use drinks bottled in plastic, steel and aluminium containers between 150ml and 3 litres. Sign up for the Money newsletter Thank you! The deposit is fully refundable and customers will be able to get the cash back when they return the bottles to designated return points at supermarkets or convenience stores. However, certain bottles will not be included in the scheme. This includes ones that are not single use or made from high-density polyethylene – this is the material used to make milk bottles. The scheme also does not include containers used for liquid medicines or flavour enhancers or sweeteners to add to drinks- such as syrups or hot sauce. It comes as an estimated 17million bottles and cans a day are not recycled in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland But this scheme aims to reduce litter and increase recycling rates and has been in the works for a while.
