Ex-Turnstile Guitarist To Undergo Competency Evaluation After Threatening to Fire Lawyer at Attempted Murder Hearing

Former Turnstile guitarist Brady Ebert was ordered to undergo a competency evaluation after threatening to fire his lawyer and press charges against police officers during his latest hearing on attempted murder charges. The hardcore musician is facing a potential life sentence after being charged with attempted first-degree murder, attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of second-degree assault for a March incident in which he allegedly hit Turnstile singer Brendan Yates’ 79-year-old father William Yates with a car. According to the Baltimore Banner, during the hearing at Montgomery County Circuit Court, Ebert accused his lawyer Mark Sobel of working with the prosecution, stating, “I’m going to fire him.” He also claimed that a previous lawyer had taken a bribe. At one point Ebert said, “We can watch the video right now and prove my innocence. I did not commit a crime.” He also threatened to file charges against the police officers, prosecutors, and defense attorneys involved in the case. His lawyer Sobel told the judge of Ebert that he had “significant concerns regarding competency,” to which Ebert declared he was “perfectly competent” and that “every part of the police report is a lie.” Judge Eric Johnson ordered Ebert to undergo a competency evaluation before the next hearing on September 22, with a trial date set for October 5th. Following the March incident, Ebert’s former band stated, “Turnstile cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community. After exhausting every available resource to support his access to help and recovery, a boundary ultimately had to be set when healthy communication was no longer possible and he began threatening violence… We have no language left for Brady.”
