Everything You Need To Know About The MTG Preview From MagicCon Amsterdam

Published Jul 17, 2026, 1:31 PM EDT Niall (pronounced Ny-ul) is a UK-based writer who has been writing about Magic: The Gathering throughout his entire career, with everything from new set breakdowns and individual deck guides to offering his opinions on the state of formats and the general direction of the iconic TCG. Niall also has a rich history covering triple-A releases, sports games, and PC hardware. As far as preview panels go, the one that just took place at MagicCon Amsterdam will be remembered as an all-time great. It's no secret that Magic: The Gathering is on quite the run as of late, especially with its in-universe offering, so expectations were high for the Reality Fracture preview, and fans were also eager to see what Wizards of the Coast has lined up for the MTG 2027 release schedule. This anticipation was rewarded with a great insight into the brand-new Planeswalker cards arriving in the set, as well as some detail on how the color-mirrored cards will work. We also got a look at some additional cards, including one representing each of the Hexhaven Colleges. Finally, we officially know the three in-universe MTG sets for 2027, so let me take you through a more detailed look at what was revealed during this MagicCon Amsterdam preview panel. Reality Fracture Cards & Products The first portion of the preview panel was focused entirely on Reality Fracture and showcasing a bunch of new cards from the set. This included seven new Planeswalker cards and two Liliana creature cards. Each of these cards comes in a Multiverse and Echoverse version, with the Echoverse version being a direct mirror of the Multiverse one. This means that Chandra, Torch of Defiance, returning as a red reprint, is mirrored by the blue Chandra, Chill of Compliance. The cards are very similar in structure and have been cleverly designed to appeal to their color identity in different ways. For example, both cards have a +1 that lets you interact with the top of your library, a +1 that adds mana, a minus ability that interacts with creatures, and both grant an emblem as part of their ultimate ability, so to speak. We also get a look at some other contrasting cards, including the return of Tinybones and its Echoverse counterpart, Titanbones. It's becoming very clear that the design team has had a lot of fun with Reality Fracture so far, and I can only hope this translates to the mechanics and gameplay, too. Secret Lair Bundle Next, we got a look at the Secret Lair Bundle, which is confirmed to be essentially a Codex Bundle-style product for Reality Fracture. It comes with two Collector Boosters, six Play Boosters, 20 foil traditional borderless lands, a spindown die, and a promo pack. Inside this promo pack will be two of ten possible Secret Lair promo cards. These are cards from the Reality Fracture set that have been given the Secret Lair treatment, meaning they've got art styles that don't necessarily fit the theme of Reality Fracture, as the artist in question has been given much more creative freedom. Some examples shown include an Anime version of The Theorist, Jace Beleren, and an abstract Enlightened Confidant. Organized Play Announcements Once the Reality Fracture portion of the event had concluded, we moved on to some additional news, which started with the confirmation that a Limited Championship will be taking place next year in Minneapolis. It will be taking place from June 18 to June 20, 2027, and the qualification process is already underway; this is just confirmation of the event's date and location. Pro Tour Hall Of Fame The other OP announcement is that the Pro Tour Hall of Fame is returning to celebrate the best of the best when it comes to Magic's competitive scene. It will return this year, and more updates will be given during the Pro Tour portion of MagicCon Amsterdam on Sunday. Mystery Booster 3 Mystery Booster 3 has been confirmed and is again coming this year, with further details coming during Gen Con.The boosters will each feature 20 cards, and the set as a whole has 59 new cards designed for Commander as well as a ton of legendary reprints. We also got a preview of a new mechanic called Rulebreaker, which features on eight cards in the set, and this mechanic intentionally breaks the standard Commander rules in some way, shape, or form. On Tolabow, Loch Rascal, which is a mono-blue card, the Rulebreaker mechanic allows you to include instant and sorcery spells of one additional mana color in the deck, as well as basic lands to cast them. MagicCons For 2027 There will be four MagicCon events taking place in 2027, up from the three that took place in 2026. Two new cities have been added to the list for the year as well, with the other two events taking place in popular returning locations. The full list of MagicCons for 2027 is as follows: Detroit, February 26-28 Tokyo, May 14-16 Las Vegas, August 27-29 Amsterdam, December 3-5 It's great to see MagicCon expanding once again, venturing into new cities like Tokyo and Detroit while maintaining strongholds like Las Vegas and Amsterdam. MTG In-Universe Sets For 2027 The biggest reveal of the panel came with the official unveiling of all three in-universe sets for 2027, including their release dates. Nauctis: The Sunken Realm - February 5 Kamigawa: Titanbreach - June 4 Zhalfir - October 4 These three new set all look incredibly promising, but I have to highlight the absolutely epic reveal of Kamigawa: Titanbreach, which is taking players back to a much beloved plane, only it's being invaded by another hugely beloved plane. Yes, Kamigawa versus Ikoria, it's basically a license to print money. Zhalfir will take us back to the plane for the first time since it was phased out by Teferi, only it's returned in the spot where Mirrodin used to sit, which throws up some very interesting dilemmas. Nauctis is the only entirely new plane for next year, and it's even more interesting to see that it will directly follow Reality Fracture from a story perspective, and we have no idea as yet whether this is a Multiverse or Echoverse setting.
