Everything We Know About the Confirmed Fourth and Final Season of ‘House of the Dragon’

Just like that, House of the Dragon is done with season 3 and the long winter wait has begun for season 4. Yes, House of the Dragon season 4 is confirmed and it will be the final season. While it’s unclear if HBO will ever be done with Targaryens, or ever get out of Westeros, this chapter at least is coming to a close. What started as a show about time jumps and bringing two families together has turned into a drawn-out all-out war between those families. At the end of season 3, Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen learned that Aegon II Targaryen is alive and Helaena Targaryen is dead. What a roller coaster for her, specifically! Is House of the Dragon really ending with Season 4?Yes, the upcoming season will also be the final season. We’ve essentially known this since 2024, per Variety, when the series was renewed for two more seasons at once. In more recent interviews, showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that House of the Dragon will end with season 4.What will House of the Dragon season 4 be about?Expect a lot more battles and a lot more death when House of the Dragons returns. Timeline-wise, the fourth and final season of House of the Dragon should cover about a year. It will depict the end of the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons, and possibly a little of the aftermath. You can read George R. R. Martin’s editorialized history book Fire & Blood to learn what happens next. But without giving too much away, amongst the characters we have gotten to know throughout the show so far, there are not many survivors.Add Cosmopolitan as a preferred source in your Google search results.Use your Google account to add this to your settings. My personal theory is that the series will end with [spoiler alert] a flash-forward to Alicent remembering her love for Rhaenyra on her deathbed. But it’s going to take a lot for the show to get to that point, both in terms of the plot and character development. After what happened has happened with Alicent and Rhaenyra’s children in season 3, and what will happen in season 4, nostalgia is a distant dream. When will we get to see House of the Dragon season 4?My best guess is that the show will continue to be an even year only affair and return in 2028. (House of the Dragon seasons 1, 2, and 3 aired in 2022, 2024, and 2026 respectively. I’m not an expert at pattern recognition, but...) Will it be a June release, like the last two seasons, or mix it up? That we can’t say for sure just yet.In the meantime, we have A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms season 2 coming in 2027 to tide us over in the Westeros goodness department. Considering how light and silly that show is compared to House of the Dragon, that should be a breath of fresh air.
