Marvel's Next Free-To-Play Game Looks Like Open World Marvel Rivals NetEase Published Oct 5, 2026, 8:55 AM EDT Josh Coulson is an editor at TheGamer covering breaking news on everything from colorful platformers to the latest Lego sets. Sign in to your TheGamer account There are a handful of Marvel video games in development right now at various studios, but the next one might be a game people still know shockingly little about. It’s called Project Comet, and even though a trailer for the game leaked a while ago, for some reason it’s currently going viral on social media. More People Are Learning About Project Comet One look at the trailer and you might think you’re watching a reveal for the next season of Marvel Rivals. You’ll be convinced of it as the game’s heroes start showing up. Scarlet Witch is first, followed by Dr. Strange, then Elektra, and right after that Wolverine, who looks the most like his Rivals counterpart. Not only is this not a trailer for the next season of Marvel Rivals, but outside of being another Marvel game, it has no ties to the NetEase hero shooter whatsoever. Project Comet is being developed by Scopely, the mobile gaming behemoth that now owns Pokemon Go and is already in bed with Marvel, having developed Marvel Strike Force. Judging by the watermark in the corner of the trailer, the video was either shared by Scopely on the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili, or it was leaked there. I’m leaning towards the latter since there doesn’t appear to be any official announcement about the game even existing from Scopely anywhere else, and the trailer just fades to black rather than cutting to a title card with relevant details, such as platforms and release date. A Free-To-Play Open World RPG The trailer appears to have been quietly circulating on TikTok for the past month. However, SargeOP seems to be the Twitter user responsible for the video now going viral elsewhere. In the post sharing the trailer, the user reveals Project Comet will be a free-to-play action RPG that takes place in an open world, and that there will be crossplay between its mobile and PC versions. No mention of whether or not Project Comet will be available on consoles. The narrator provides some backstory as to what’s going on in this new Marvel world. It seems that, in this universe, the Fantastic Four were the primary heroes. However, after being taken out by Galactus, it’s time for new heroes to step up and take their place. That’s why players will be working co-op in teams of four and, having been shown some gameplay snippets, I’m getting Ultimate Alliance vibes, which I am very much here for. Let's hope I'm barking up the right tree. Even though people are only just getting wind of Project Comet, there have been rumblings about it for a while. Mmmmmmmmiller, who typically shares news about Rivals, posted information about a Project Comet beta test four months ago. The circulation of its trailer, along with more details about what it is and how it works, suggests that we might be able to play Project Comet pretty soon.
