This year has already been great for the cyberpunk subgenre of science fiction, and it's only going to get better thanks to these upcoming shows. Cyberpunk has, historically, been mainly a film genre. Movies like Blade Runner, RoboCop, and The Matrix make up some of the best cyberpunk movies of all time, and they've garnered widespread acclaim and popularity. Conversely, cyberpunk television doesn't have the best track record. While there are some shining gems of cyberpunk television, like Altered Carbon season 1 and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the subgenre has just as many failures, like Netflix's live-action Cowboy Bebop and Altered Carbon season 2. Cyberpunk itself is partly to blame: the high tech gadgets, massive cityscapes, and downright depressing tone of the genre make for expensive television shows that don't cater to huge audiences. Cyberpunk's small screen struggles may soon be ending, though. This year alone, we've already gotten a top-notch remake of The Ghost in the Shell. The next few months are going to be huge for cyberpunk television shows as well, as there are currently four different series in varying stages of development, and three of them are live-action. Here's everything you need to know about those upcoming cyberpunk shows, including where to watch them, when they come out, and what to expect from their stories. 4 Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 Premieres On Netflix October 20 The next cyberpunk show fans can look forward to won't keep them waiting long. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, the second season of the beloved anime, premieres on Netflix in just under two weeks, on Tuesday, October 20. While it is the second season of the show, Edgerunners 2 is telling an all-new story set in the same universe as the TTRPG and the video game Cyberpunk 2077. As such, it won't have any direct connection to the story of David Martinez. Instead, Edgerunners 2 is set to make the series into an anthology. The season will focus on a few new characters, including Weak, a "washed-up cyberpunk legend" who supposedly cannot use cybernetic enhancements anymore, D, a "deadly nomad" on a revenge quest, Roman, a young boy who aspires to be a documentarian, and Talia, a member of the cybernetic-obsessed Maelstrom gang. There's also a trailer for Edgerunners 2 already. Additionally, despite the second season's disconnect from the first, fans can expect more of what made Edgerunners such a beloved cyberpunk series in the first place. Night City, with its corps and insane human rights abuses, will be back in stunning animated glory. CD Projekt Red and Trigger likely have another devastating story in place for the new cast of characters, and it's guaranteed to be packed to the gills with action. 3 Blade Runner 2099 Premieres On Prime Video November 25 Via MovieStillsDB The first live-action cyberpunk series fans should mark their calendar for also marks the return of one of the genre's first franchises. Prime Video's Blade Runner 2099 is set to take place half a century after the Ryan Gosling and Denis Villeneuve film, and it premieres on November 25. Starring Michelle Yeoh as a replicant named Olwen and Hunter Schafer as a human named Cora, Blade Runner 2099 looks great already. While it is bringing back the world of Blade Runner over 44 years after Harrison Ford and Ridley Scott's original film, 2099 is also making drastic changes to the franchise. As teased in the trailer for Blade Runner 2099, humans and replicants have switched roles, with replicants being the dominant "species" on Earth and humans being persecuted. Cora, then, pretends to be a replicant to survive. Blade Runner 2099 then takes that setting and sets Cora and Olwen on a mission to hunt down rogue replicants. Given the franchise's history of being heavily steeped in mystery, however, that's likely just the start of 2099's story. At this point, it's impossible to predict what Blade Runner 2099 has in store beyond the neon lights, rainy cityscapes, and android-human tensions that have defined the franchise so far. 2 Neuromancer Premieres On Apple TV January 22 Credit: Apple TV One of the most surprising and exciting upcoming cyberpunk shows is an adaptation of a different staple of the subgenre. Though the seminal cyberpunk novel by William Gibson was long considered unfilmable, Apple TV is taking a stab at adapting Neuromancer into live-action. Starring Callum Turner as Case and Briana Middleton as Molly Millions, Neuromancer is set to premiere on January 22, 2027. Since the Apple TV show is an adaptation of a classic novel, we already have a complete picture of what to expect from Neuromancer's story. Neuromancer follows Case, a hacker and console cowboy who lost his ability to enter cyberspace after trying to rob his employer. Case then joins Molly, a razorgirl and samurai, on a job to secure the consciousness of a famous hacker for Armitage, an ex-military officer. The trailer for Neuromancer promised a faithful adaptation of the novel, which gets weird very quickly from there. Apple TV's upcoming adaptation of Neuromancer is exciting for a number of reasons. As previously mentioned, Neuromancer is one of the foundational texts of cyberpunk as a whole. It did as much for cyberpunk as The Godfather did for mafia movies, down to tropes and trends that were constantly imitated by everything that came after it. It's long-held "unfilmable" status also makes it a major event for fans of the original novel. It should be enough to generate the same kind of hype Denis Villeneuve's Dune films enjoy. In short, Neuromancer is a must-watch for any self-respecting cyberpunk fan. 1 Alien: Earth Season 2 Premieres On Hulu/Disney+ In 2027 Image via MovieStillsDB The last cyberpunk show on the horizon is yet another modern installment in a classic franchise. FX's Alien: Earth season 2 doesn't currently have an official release date, but it's expected to premiere on Disney+ and Hulu sometime in 2027. Despite the uncertainty surrounding its release date, Alien: Earth season 2 is actually one of the more certain shows on this list, as it's the only proper sequel to an existing story. Based on the ending of Alien: Earth season 1, which saw Sydney Chandler's Wendy and her team of Lost Boys, human-android hybrids, take over Neverland Island, season 2 has a clear path forward. Wendy's connection with the Xenomorphs, Weyland-Yutani's reaction to Prodigy's downfall, and the Lost Boys' future plans should all be mainstays of the show. Of course, there will likely be even more twists and turns in store that will be impossible to predict. There's also a good chance that Alien: Earth season 2 will lean even further into its cyberpunk elements than season 1 did. If Wendy and the Lost Boys end up going to the mainland, for example, they'll trade in jungles and labs for massive cityscapes and corporate dystopias. The new season also has a chance to further explore the other world-dominating megacorporations beyond just Weyland-Yutani and Prodigy. In short, Alien: Earth is just one of many reasons science fiction and cyberpunk fans should be excited.
