Even hardcore Marvel fans miss it sometimes. Honestly, even Marvel writers misinterpret what truly sets the two mutant heroes apart sometimes, but a conversation between Scott Summers and his executive officer with the X-Men, Psylocke, just hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately, that might be an ominous portent for Cyclops' near future. Cyclops is, at times, mischaracterized as the less violent of the two, between him and Wolverine, but time and again in X-lore, Scott Summers has been forced to remind the people around him, and readers by extension, that he is a soldier for mutantkind. That means he's willing to kill, when it is necessary, just like Logan. The difference is, Scott has developed a much better sense than Logan, or any of the other most lethal X-Men, of when to let their enemies live. Not because it is morally right, but because it is the tactically smart thing to do. He says as much to Psylocke in the latest issue of Marvel's flagship X-Men series, as he sets his top lieutenant on an assassination mission against their enemies, the 3K organization. In the end, though, the mission leads her to some troubling epiphanies. About herself. About the X-Men. And about Cyclops. Warning! Spoilers for X-Men #40 ahead! Marvel Highlights The Thin Line Between Cyclops & Wolverine X-Men #40 is full of action, but its biggest plot developments might have come in its quietest moments. That's the scene where Psylocke and Cyclops share a couple of tallboys up on the roof of the X-Men's Alaskan base, the Factory. She's brooding over having let the villainous Andreas Von Strucker live, and Scott tells her "normally" he'd have sanctioned the killing, but that there were witnesses, and it wasn't a good look for the team. Cyclops has become someone who is willing and able to make amoral tactical decisions on behalf of his people. The same thing that drove a wedge between him and X-Men founder Charles Xavier. It is a weight that Wolverine, for all of his willingness to get his hands dirty and do bad things for the X-Men so his teammates won't have to, wouldn't be able to handle for as long as Cyclops has. But the questions X-Men #40 asks are whether Psylocke can, and whether she might need to, if Cyclops can't handle the weight anymore. If the ability to make hard, but necessary choices for the X-Men is what distinguishes Cyclops from Wolverine, and is what makes him the right choice to lead the team, what happens when Scott loses that ability? That tactical vision? Teasers for the next phase of X-Men canon suggest that fans might be about to find out. Cyclops Might Be Out As The X-Men's Leader As Soon As December X-Men #43, out in December, is shaping up to be a big turning point for the franchise. That's because the team is set to vote for their next leader, with Magneto and Jean Grey seemingly the two frontrunners on the ballot. Though after X-Men #40, Psylocke should also very much be in the mix as well. Whether Cyclops is also still in contention, or if something is going to happen in the intervening two issues to cause him to be ousted as head of the X-Men, those are the big questions looming over the character right now. If the X-Men lose faith in Cyclops' ability to make those hard decisions, or worse, if he stops making the right decisions, he will have become effectively no different than Wolverine. Still one of Marvel's great mutant heroes, but not the leader that mutantkind needs, or wants, and that will be something that changes Scott Summers' trajectory for a long time coming.
