Actors from across the video game industry have spoken up against AI voice generation, calling on people to stop using their voices without permission. Even outside the games industry, AI voice generation is becoming a problem. You have Hasbro attempting to sign away the voice rights of child actors working on Peppa Pig, and now even legendary anime actors like Megumi Ogata are speaking out against the practice. For those who don’t know the name, Ogata is famous in anime circles for voicing Shinji in Neon Genesis Evangelion, but has also appeared in plenty of other anime including Jujustu Kaisen, and video games such as Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: Refantazio. Megumi Ogata Thinks People Stealing Her Voice Is "Heartbreaking" In a recent interview with Japanese media outlet TBS News Dig (translated by Automaton), Ogata spoke out against the use of AI voice generation, calling on the Japanese government to do something, and saying that people lifting her voice to use and sell as their own work is “heartbreaking” to her. “My voice is a part of my identity,” says Ogata. “I really don’t understand why somebody would want to make me say things that I don’t want to say as they please and then sell it as my own voice. It’s heartbreaking.” Ogata isn’t the only actor that’s spoken out against AI in the past either, with Persona 5 actor Erica Lindbeck having previously been run off Twitter after asking fans not to AI generate her voice. You also had the year-long SAG-AFTRA strike that campaigned for protections against AI usage. Unfortunately, there isn’t much else in place to stop random people from stealing an actor’s voice and using it in stupid TikToks or YouTube videos, but the way things are going, and as AI gets trickier and trickier to discern from reality, we’ll hopefully see things start to change.
