EU Approves 5 Defense Projects Worth $369M, Ukraine Takes Part in 4 of Them

The European Commission has approved the first five European Defence Projects of Common Interest (EDPCI) worth $369 million, with Ukraine included in four of them. The projects will strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities by developing key military systems together. EDPCI is a funding track within the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP), a $1.7 billion EU-wide initiative to strengthen and modernize Europe’s defense industry. The Commission allocated €325 million ($368.6 million) to support the creation and deployment of EDPCI, a program of large-scale industrial projects that lays the groundwork for member states to collaborate on major defense initiatives. “The proposal concerns an area of shared competence, in particular the industrial dimension of the Union’s defence readiness. The objectives pursued by the proposal cannot be sufficiently achieved by Member States acting alone”, the European Commission wrote in the document. The industrial projects focus on five priority areas: drones and counter-drone systems, maritime and seabed defense, space, air and missile defense, and strengthening security along the EU’s Eastern Flank, wrote the European Commission on its website. Ukraine is participating in all areas except space. Drone and Counter-Drone European Resolve (DECODER): Aims to enable the coordinated development, scaling, and deployment of European unmanned and counter-unmanned systems to address critical capability gaps across member states. The estimated budget is $3.97 billion to $5.68 billion by 2033. Integrated Maritime and Seabed Defence (IMSD): Seeks to establish a federated and interoperable European maritime and seabed defense architecture. It is designed to strengthen the EU’s ability to prevent, detect, deter, and respond to threats across the maritime domain. The estimated budget is $48.9 billion to $81.8 billion by 2045. EU Federated Integrated Air and Missile Defence (EU-FIAMD): Designed to provide member states with a collective and effective integrated air and missile defense system, including early warning information and command-and-control capabilities. The estimated budget is $62.5 billion to $90.9 billion by 2040. Eastern Flank Watch (EFW): A comprehensive multi-domain effort to enhance the security of the EU’s eastern border, ensuring the protection of the entire union and strengthening its defense readiness. The estimated budget is $68.2 billion to $113.6 billion by 2036. Space: While Ukraine will not participate in this specific initiative, the project aims to create new market opportunities and reduce the EU’s structural dependence in the space sector. The estimated budget is up to $27.3 billion by 2034.
