Etihad Airways Launches New 15-Hour Nonstop Route To North America In Only 2 Months

Today marks two months to go until the inaugural service on the new Etihad Airways route from Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) in the United Arab Emirates to Calgary International Airport (YYC) in the Canadian province of Alberta. The UAE flag carrier plans to serve this route using its Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner widebody twinjets, with the corridor representing Calgary's first Middle Eastern link. Of course, this might not have been the case, had things panned out differently. Indeed, on the Canadian end of this route, WestJet did secure the necessary slots to operate nonstop flights between Calgary and Dubai International Airport (DXB) several years ago. However, these services ultimately never came to fruition, and, as such, it will now be Etihad Airways that gets to make history in two months. Two Months To Go Etihad Airways announced its plans to link its main hub in Abu Dhabi with Calgary International Airport back in January of this year. At the time, it was eyeing November 3, 2026, as the start date. However, data made available by Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that this has since been brought forward to October 25, exactly two months from now, as Etihad's North American presence booms. The airline said at the time of the route's announcement that it "marks another step in Etihad’s global expansion and supports Abu Dhabi’s long-term ambitions to drive international trade, tourism and investment." It also drew parallels between Abu Dhabi and Calgary as "two globally recognised centres of energy, innovation and culture." Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves welcomed the announcement, saying that: "By creating the only nonstop link between the Middle East and Western Canada, we are opening new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment, while giving travellers direct access to two distinctive and globally important destinations." Times & Frequencies Credit: Shutterstock While Etihad Airways is clearly confident in its new route from Abu Dhabi to Calgary, it would be a considerable gamble to operate daily flights straight off the bat on such a long and unproven route. As such, the UAE flag carrier instead plans to serve the route four times a week, on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner widebody twinjet being its aircraft of choice. Flying westbound, data from Cirium shows that Etihad Airways flight EY29 will leave Abu Dhabi at 2:25 AM. Its arrival into Calgary is timed for 7:00 AM on the same day, some 14 hours and 35 minutes later when accounting for the changes in time zone. EY30, meanwhile, will leave Calgary at 1:00 PM, and touch down in Abu Dhabi at 12:55 PM the next day. This gives it a block time of 13 hours and 55 minutes. When it comes to flights from the Middle East to Calgary, you may remember that Canadian carrier WestJet secured slots to fly between Alberta and Dubai a few years ago. This was reported by Airways Magazine back in November of 2022, with the airline reportedly planning to launch flights on this route the following March, also using the Boeing 787-9. The most recent change has seen four seats removed from business class, but, according to Cirium, the Calgary flights will be using the slightly older 2024 layout that has 303 seats on board. These are laid out in the four-abreast 1-2-1 configuration that has become the standard in long-haul premium travel, with every passenger given direct aisle access. The 271 economy seats are spread across the middle and rear cabin sections in a 3-3-3 layout that narrows to 2-3-2 at the back.
