We are just weeks away from seeing a new connection between the Middle East and Alberta, Canada, as Etihad Airways prepares to launch a new route between Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) and Calgary International Airport (YYC). Earlier this year, the airline also launched flights to Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in the US, becoming the only Middle Eastern operator to serve North Carolina. However, these are just a few of the interesting developments in its network. Simple Flying took a look at how the airline’s network has changed since the beginning of this year, including several routes it has launched or plans to introduce in 2027. Many of these services are to China and Africa, as well as some destinations across Europe. Etihad Airways Adds An Unusual European Destination Credit: Longfin Media | Shutterstock It’s no secret that Etihad focuses on connecting passengers to other cities through its Abu Dhabi hub. Many of its routes rely on this connecting traffic, and its latest addition to a rather unusual European destination, Luxembourg, is a good example. From October 29, the airline is launching three weekly flights between Abu Dhabi and Luxembourg-Findel International Airport (LUX), using its Airbus A321LR aircraft. There is already some higher-yielding point-to-point traffic on the route, but the airline will also look to attract passengers who connect through Abu Dhabi. The UAE carrier has noted that passengers would benefit from onward connections to several Asian countries through its hub. Simple Flying previously analyzed the potential connecting markets for the Luxembourg service. These included Bangkok, Tokyo, Shanghai, Delhi, Singapore, Mauritius, Bali/Denpasar, Seoul, Mumbai and Beijing. Booking data for the 12 months to October 2025 recorded approximately 210,000 round-trip passengers between Luxembourg and destinations across the Middle East, Asia, Australia, and Eastern and Southern Africa. Until recently, the airline’s mainland China network was limited to a daily, year-round service to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX). However, earlier this month, it resumed flights to Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG), more than a year after suspending the route. The carrier will add four more Chinese destinations in March 2027. It will resume flights to Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), which it last served in February 2024, and launch new services to Chengdu Tianfu International Airport (TFU), Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (HGH) and Shenzhen Bao'an International Airport (SZX). With these additions, Etihad’s mainland China network will grow to 35 weekly flights across six destinations. Destination Start Date Frequency Shanghai Pudong (PVG) October 1, 2026 Daily Guangzhou (CAN) March 4, 2027 Daily Chengdu (TFU) March 5, 2027 4x weekly Hangzhou (HGH) March 4, 2027 5x weekly Shenzhen (SZX) March 7, 2027 5x weekly All services will be operated by the airline’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner fleet, configured with 28 business class and 262 economy class seats. Indeed, the expansion builds on Etihad’s joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, which already operates a daily service between Shanghai Pudong and Abu Dhabi. According to scheduled data from aviation analytics provider Cirium, Etihad and China Eastern Airlines will offer a combined 38,731 seats from Abu Dhabi to China in March 2027. Across all airlines, nearly 250 flights are scheduled between Abu Dhabi and China in both directions that month, with approximately 79,780 seats available. Etihad Airways Looks To Feed More Traffic Between Africa & Asia-Pacific Credit: Ryken Papy | Shutterstock Perhaps there is another development that makes Etihad’s expansion in China even more interesting. Next year, the Abu Dhabi-based airline is adding six African destinations to its network. It will launch flights to Asmara (4x weekly), Accra (4x weekly), Kinshasa (3x weekly) and Lagos (Daily) in March 2027. It will also introduce a service linking Harare, Zimbabwe (3x weekly), and Lubumbashi (3x weekly) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. These additions could create more opportunities for the Abu Dhabi-based airline to connect passengers between Africa and Asia through Abu Dhabi, particularly between Africa and China. None of the six new African destinations currently has a nonstop connection to China. So, the Gulf carrier can use its expanding networks on both continents to offer one-stop journeys through its Abu Dhabi hub. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), more than 67 million of the world’s 417 million connecting passengers transited through the Middle East last year. In fact, around 33% of passengers traveling to or from the Asia-Pacific region connected through the Middle East in 2025. And of the major international route pairs that rely on the region for connecting traffic, routes between Asia-Pacific and Africa have the highest share of passengers connecting through Middle Eastern airports.
