Significantly, it will be the first time that scheduled passenger services have existed between the Middle East and Alberta, Canada. Etihad will have two routes to Canada for the first time. The brand-new service to YYC will join the operator's existing service to Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), which is the only North American destination to see its Airbus A380s. Etihad Airways From Abu Dhabi To Calgary Etihad will begin flying to YYC on Sunday, October 25, which is when Northern Hemisphere airlines change to winter schedules based on IATA slot seasons. The carrier will operate four times a week using the 303-seat Boeing 787-9. Ch-aviation shows that Etihad has 35 787-9s, which makes it the airline's most popular widebody equipment. The airline's 787-9s are in three different layouts, with the 303-seat version being the most economy-heavy. There are 32 seats in business (1-2-1) and 271 seats in economy (3-3-3; 31" pitch). Due to YYC's high elevation, which reduces takeoff performance with a heavy payload, a payload restriction may be required back to AUH. On a great circle basis, the brand-new route will cover 6,243 nautical miles (11,562 km) each way. Based on this measure, it'll be the carrier's new fourth-longest route to North America. As the table below shows, flights will be timed at up to 14 hours and 35 minutes to Canada. On this basis, it is 'only' the airline's sixth-longest route to the continent. Days AUH To YYC; Local Times YYC To AUH; Local Times Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays EY29: 2:25 AM-7:00 AM (14 hours and 35 minutes) EY30: 1:00 PM-12:55 PM+1 (13h and 55 minutes) The 2:25 AM departure time from the Gulf is part of Etihad's largest bank of departing flights to North America. They're fed by huge numbers of services, particularly from Asia (and especially India, which will be critical for this new market). The long six-hour turnaround in YYC is so that flights arrive home at 12:55 PM the following day, which is during the largest number of inbound services from the US and Canada. This is, of course, for onward connectivity reasons. Unsurprisingly, it is the third-largest Middle Eastern operator to the continent, behind Emirates from Dubai (119 weekly services) and Qatar Airways from Doha (98). Yet the new AUH-YYC service, and some other changes, means that only Etihad's offering has grown compared to last November (+17%). Given the ongoing war in Iran, with all the consequences of that, it is more exposed than before the conflict started. It is positioning itself for after it ends. Etihad has grown its North American network strongly recently. Flights to Atlanta launched in July 2025 (I was on the first departure), followed by those to Charlotte in March 2026 (becoming the only Middle Eastern operator to North Carolina) and now YYC. No other place in the US or Canada has been announced. Three other cities were previously served: Dallas (until 2018), Los Angeles (until 2020), and San Francisco (until 2017). Thanks to Delta Air Lines, Atlanta is, of course, the world's busiest airport for passengers, but it is not first for flights. While just one performance metric, the load factor was 79.9%, which was five points lower than the carrier's US average. Nonetheless, five of the months had a load exceeding 90%. Of course, it is unclear what fares were needed to achieve the result, especially so soon after flights began. Then there's Charlotte, which welcomed Etihad in March this year. Currently, DOT data only exists for through June. In that period, 34,406 passengers were carried, with a load factor of 73.3%. Three of the months saw fewer than 71.7% of seats filled, including June (70.3%). Of course, it is early days, and the war in Iran does not help. If flights do not exceed four weekly services in 2027, expect changes.
