Ethiopia pro-government forces say they take Tigray town

The Tigray People’s Liberation Front, or TPLF, the main rebel force, launched attacks into the neighboring Amhara and Afar regions Wednesday.(AFP) — Pro-government forces in Ethiopia said Monday they had taken control of Alamata, a town in southern Tigray, after days of clashes with rebel forces on multiple fronts.The loss of Alamata, a strategic town on a major highway into Tigray, would mark a reversal for Tigrayan rebels, who launched offensives against government forces last week.The clashes have raised fears of a return to the full-scale civil war of 2020-22, which killed an estimated 600,000 people.The Tigray Peace Force, a Tigrayan splinter group aligned with the federal government, announced the town’s capture on Facebook.
