Eternal Darkness looks like it’s coming back as studio teases remaster

The Nintendo GameCube might be synonymous with games like Super Smash Bros. Melee and Metroid Prime, but it was also a surprisingly good system for horror games. Capcom’s all-timer Resident Evil 4 debuted on the console, as well as the rightly lauded remake of Resident Evil 1, but it also housed gateway horrors like Luigi’s Mansion. Those games have since been ported to other systems, but one that hasn’t been so lucky is 2002’s Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. Developed by Silicon Knights, Eternal Darkness was published by Nintendo in what was a rare adult-focused title for the company. It’s best known for its sanity effects, where the game would pretend your save data was corrupt or bugs are crawling over the screen – as characters lose their grasp on reality. It’s become a cult favourite, even if the gameplay itself hasn’t aged particularly well. If you’ve been hoping for a remaster, though, Nightdive Studios co-founder and CEO Stephen Kick has suggested something is on the cards. In response to a fan on X, who asked whether we’ll see Eternal Darkness return, Kick replied: ‘Eternal Darkness is one of my all-time favourites and it deserves the treatment I know @NightdiveStudio is capable of.’ Expert, exclusive gaming analysis Sign up to the GameCentral newsletter for a unique take on the week in gaming, alongside the latest reviews and more. Along with a link to Nightdive’s YouTube channel, he added: ‘Keep your eye on our Deep Dives…’ While it’s not technically confirmation, it certainly sounds like he’s teasing an announcement in the near future. Nightdive Studios is primarily known for remasters of 90s and 2000 era games. Over recent years, it has launched revamped versions of System Shock 2, Star Wars: Dark Forces and Turok 3. Nintendo owns the Eternal Darkness IP, so if Nightdive is working on a remaster, the big N must have given them approval. The game’s original developer, Silicon Knights, filed for bankruptcy in 2014 after losing a court battle with Epic Games in 2012. Some ex-Silicon Knights staff formed a new studio, Precursor Games, in 2013, and attempted to crowdfund a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness entitled Shadow Of The Eternals. However, the campaign was shut down due to a lack of funding. While Nintendo hasn’t done anything with the Eternal Darkness IP since, it has started to lean back into horror. Just recently, a supernatural horror title named Onyx: The Dark Grip was announced for Nintendo Switch 2, by Silent Hill 2 developer Bloober Team, and the company is set to publish The Duskbloods, by developer FromSoftware, later this year.
