Espaillat ousted in New York House primary by Mamdani-backed candidate

In a significant upset, Democratic socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier has toppled incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for New York's 13th Congressional District, signaling a strong push from the socialist movement in New York City. This victory underscores the growing influence of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, whose endorsement of Chevalier highlights a potential shift within the Democratic Party towards more progressive policies. This outcome could reshape the political landscape in the district and beyond, reflecting broader trends in American politics towards left-leaning agendas.
