Chelsea splashed £107m on Fernandez just six months after he made his move to Benfica and that netted River £25m due to the 25 percent sell-on clause they inserted in his sale to Benfica. River Plate will receive 3.37% of the transfer fee through the solidarity mechanism clubs get for players they develop in all deals through Fifa. That amounts to around £5m and takes the club’s profits on Fernandez up to the £50m mark. While River Plate must be delighted to see an investment pay off to such a lucrative level, they’ll do well to be as happy as Fernandez is to link up with Maresca again.
