AN entire UK county is considering a fresh ban on all disposable barbecues in the area. Failure to comply with the rules, if introduced, could see Brits slammed with a maximum fine of £1,000. Thalia Marrington, the cabinet member for community safety at the council, said the ban would potentially be enforced using a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO). Sign up for The Sun newsletter Thank you! If a PSPO is breached, authorised police officers can issue an on-the-spot fine of up to £100, with failure to pay increasing the maximum fee to £1,000. Councillor James Mustoe, who raised the issue earlier this month, suggested the council should go further and ban disposable barbecues altogether. He told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: “Given the national moves around temporarily restricting the sale and use of single use barbecues over the summer due to the wildfires that have been caused, I think that now is the time for Cornwall Council to look at this again.” The discussions follow a spate of wildfires this summer prompted by five consecutive heatwaves and dry conditions. On August 14, the government sent out an emergency text to millions of Brits warning them about the dangers of wildfires. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, as part of this, announced a temporary ban on the sale of disposable barbecues as they posed a “significant risk to the public”. Most read in The Sun Mustoe continued to share his concerns about barbecues being lit on Cornwall’s beaches, saying there were issues “where barbecues have been buried and caused injuries by making the sand dangerously hot”.
