A poll of 2,000 adults found the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II was voted as the moment that united the nation the most, closely followed by the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony and the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The research was commissioned by National Rail ahead of the return of Celebrity Traitors, one of the biggest TV talking points of recent years. Last year’s series gripped the nation with more than 15 million people watching Alan Carr’s win – with the moment becoming the UK’s most watched show in 2025. The study found that when Brits miss cultural events like the Traitors finale, 20 per cent said they watched or streamed it as soon as they possibly could, with 13 per cent experiencing a fear of missing out (FOMO). More than 11 per cent admit to catching up on major TV moments while on the move, while 17 per cent have streamed missed shows during a train journey, highlighting how rail travel helps people stay connected to the nation’s biggest talking points. Dan Mann, co-CEO for Rail Delivery Group on behalf of National Rail, said: “From the latest Celebrity Traitors twists to major sporting moments and sell-out concerts, these events help bring the nation together. “Our research shows just how important it is for people to stay connected to these shared experiences, whether that’s watching live, trying to avoid spoilers, travelling to an event or sharing reactions with friends and family. Most read in The Sun “Train journeys give people the time and space to catch up on what they’ve missed and stay part of the conversation.” It also emerged shared cultural moments have a lasting impact, with 44 per cent saying they still talk about major events for weeks afterwards. And 41 per cent of adults feel these cultural events created a buzz across the nation, while 45 per cent said it left them feeling patriotic. The 2026 solar eclipse was the event Brits were most likely to have witnessed first-hand, with 22 per cent saying they stepped outside to watch the phenomenon through filter glasses. Of the events adults wished they’d witnessed in person, 51 per cent regret not being at Wimbledon for Andy Murray’s historic 2013 victory, while 14 per cent were sorry they weren’t in the stadium for Super Saturday at the 2012 Olympics. But 40 per cent said experiencing these events in real time, whether in person or on TV, helped them experience the emotions alongside everyone else, while 35 per said it created a sense of national unity. The research, carried out via OnePoll.com, also highlighted the role train travel plays in these shared experiences, with 27 per cent choosing to travel via rail to live events. Among those travellers, the atmosphere (45 per cent), speaking to strangers (42 per cent) and chatting with their companions (41 per cent) were cited as the most memorable parts of the trip.
