Elise’s Formula-Changing New Insidious 6 Role Teased By Lin Shaye Ahead Of Out Of The Further

The Emmy winner has served as one of the horror franchise's key players since its 2011 inception, with Elise acting as the majority of characters' guides into the world of the paranormal, particularly the nightmarish Further dimension. The character also became more of the lead going into the third and fourth Insidious movies, which served as prequels to the original, in which she was killed by the Old Woman ghost after it possessed Josh. Now, coming into Insidious: Out of the Further, Shaye returns as Elise, though in an interesting new role as she assists Amelia Eve's Gemma from beyond the grave as the new protagonist finds herself haunted by various entities from The Further. The character is first re-introduced in the sequel as Gemma seeks help from Maisie Richardson-Sellers' Clare, who has her own unique connection with Elise. Ahead of the film's August 21 release, ScreenRant's Brandon Zachary interviewed Lin Shaye to discuss Insidious: Out of the Further. When asked about what intrigued her to return as Elise, the star began by acknowledging that "I love the character," but has especially loved "finding new things [out] about her" with each installment, including "new vulnerabilities and new strengths." Shaye even recalled the initial discussions with James Wan making the original film, in which he was debating reversing her character's death: Lin Shaye: With each story that's told, I discover a new thing about the character. Needless to say, on the side of being an actor in a film I love, I'm so honored and thrilled to be invited back. I was telling a little story about James Wan, when we did the first one. The dailies were getting great [feedback] that people loved this character, and he said, "I don't know. Maybe we shouldn't kill you off at the end of this. Who knows if there'll be a second one?" And here we are, six movies later! I'm elated and very, very, very happy. When looking at Elise's arc in Out of the Further compared to other Insidious movies, in which she's more the storyteller than a part of someone else's story, Shaye recalled being "surprised" at her formula-changing new role, as she acts as Gemma's "guide throughout The Further" in a more direct manner: Lin Shaye: I'm leading Amelia's character, Gemma — although I don't have any real relation with [Brandon Perea's character] in this whole story, so what do I know? But that was of interest to me. I'm the one that's the guide, or the guardian angel taking them through. Much to Shaye's point, the previous Insidious movies typically used Elise in one of two capacities. After the first film largely saw her acting as a vocal guide for Patrick WIlson's Josh to enter The Further, and how to navigate it, the subsequent sequels saw her get more directly involved in fighting its various threats, including Danielle Bisutti's Michelle Crane, Michael Reid MacKay's "The Man Who Can't Breathe," and Javier Botet's Keyface. Coming into Insidious: Out of the Further, there are certainly a number of changes being made to Elise's formula. For starters, this will be the first time she more directly interacts with the world of the living beyond the Lambert family, with the only other example being that of Chapter 2's ending, in which her spirit was seen venturing with Leigh Whannell's Specs and Angus Sampson's Tucker to a young girl's house for a new investigation. Additionally, while it's currently unclear whether Elise still interacts with her former partners, or whether they'll make an appearance in Insidious: Out of the Further, it's also not yet known how she and Clare first became connected, further adding new wrinkles to the character's formula. Given Gemma also has the ability to bring spirits from The Further into the real world, it will be interesting to see if the franchise's creatives use this opportunity to bring Elise properly back to life, or at the very least have her venture back in order to help put a stop to the terrifying new threats.
