Mike Blake/Reuters Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Esmat met on Sunday, July 26, 2026, with Egyptian ambassadors and heads of diplomatic missions to present investment opportunities in the country’s renewable energy sector and discuss plans to expand international cooperation. During the meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the New Capital, Esmat reviewed Egypt’s strategy to increase investment in solar and wind energy, modernize the national power grid and accelerate the transition to smart grid technologies. He said that Egypt offers many investment opportunities in renewable energy and electricity infrastructure, supported by an expanding network of international partnerships and government policies aimed at increasing private sector participation. Esmat added that Egypt is working to strengthen its position as a regional energy hub through electricity interconnection projects with Sudan, Libya, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, as well as planned links with Greece and Italy, which will support cross-border trade in clean electricity. He also noted that the updated national energy strategy targets increasing the share of renewable energy to 45% of total electricity generation by 2028, while continuing efforts to localize electrical equipment manufacturing and attract foreign investment. Additionally, the minister reviewed the ongoing projects to improve grid efficiency, expand battery energy storage, upgrade electricity distribution networks and reduce reliance on conventional fuels.
