India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded strong growth in September 2026, with total retail sales reaching 36,108 units, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).EV passenger vehicle retail sales increased 17.63% month-on-month from 30,696 units in August 2026. Compared to September 2025, when 18,559 electric passenger vehicles were retailed, sales almost doubled, registering a 94.56% year-on-year growth.The growth was also reflected in EV penetration. Electric passenger vehicles accounted for 8.5% of total passenger vehicle retail sales in September 2026, up from 7.6% in August and 5.7% in September last year.Tata Motors continued to lead the electric passenger vehicle market, recording 14,791 units in September. The company registered a 12.41% increase over August and a 100.72% increase over September 2025.Mahindra remained in second place with 7,780 units, recording 20.36% month-on-month growth and 95.82% year-on-year growth. JSW MG Motor India was third with 5,242 units, up 13.41% over August and 9.14% over the same month last year.VinFast recorded 2,964 units in September, up from 2,199 units in August. The company had retailed just six units in September 2025 as it was in the early stages of its India operations.Kia India posted one of the strongest month-on-month performances among the major manufacturers, with sales rising 95.66% to 1,262 units. BYD India recorded 836 units, while Hyundai Motor India retailed 792 units during the month.In the premium EV segment, BMW India recorded 502 units, up 83.21% month-on-month. Tesla India retailed 291 vehicles, registering a 150.86% increase over August and a 321.74% increase compared to September 2025.Maruti Suzuki recorded 1,104 electric vehicle retail sales in September, while Toyota sold 218 units.
