Elderly couple shot dead at home, 30-year-old son injured; family enmity suspected

An elderly couple were shot dead and their son was left critically injured after unidentified attackers opened fire at their home in Jharkhand's Bokaro district, police said on Friday.The deceased were identified as Naresh Sinha and Renu Sinha, both in their sixties. Their 30-year-old son, Rohit Sinha, is undergoing treatment at Bokaro General Hospital, where his condition remains critical, officers said.Police said the incident took place around 7.30 pm on Thursday at Pashchim Palli in the DVC Residential Colony under Chandrapura police station limits. According to officers, the assailants knocked on the door of the family's quarters and, when it was opened, sprayed the husband and wife with bullets, killing them on the spot. They then fired at Rohit Sinha, who suffered three gunshot wounds."At the time of the incident, the area was witnessing loud thunder and lightning, which drowned the sounds of the gunshots and the assailants, suspected to number two or three, fled the spot before neighbours could realise anything," Chandrapura police station in-charge Vikram Kumar Badal said. Bermo Sub-divisional Police Officer Ravindra Kumar said, "Prima facie, it seems the killings were carried out due to some previous animosity, and the family's relatives might be involved." He said the injured son was operated on, but his condition remained critical. Police also said the family originally hails from Bihar's Gaya district.Forensic and dog squad teams were deployed, and further investigation is under way to ascertain the motive behind the murders, another officer said. The post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted on Friday. Police have launched a detailed probe and are carrying out raids at several locations to nab the culprits. The assailants fired at least 12 rounds, officers said.
