After more than eight years of waiting, The Elder Scrolls 6 is finally showing signs of life, with Bethesda officially revealing the long-awaited RPG's full title. Bethesda first announced the long-awaited sequel at E3 2018, offering nothing more than a sweeping landscape shot and a title card, and the studio has kept details scarce ever since. As Skyrim approaches its 15th anniversary this November, players are still waiting for their first proper look at the next mainline installment, let alone a confirmed release date. Last week, however, there was finally reason to believe Bethesda was preparing to break its silence. On October 29, a report from The Verge claimed that the company would officially reveal The Elder Scrolls 6's full name as early as November, potentially around Skyrim's anniversary. That prediction has now come true, with Xbox officially unveiling the title The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel today, November 3. Although the announcement doesn't include gameplay or a release window, the newly revealed name offers a major clue about the sequel's long-rumored setting of Hammerfell. Bethesda has finally delivered some concrete details pointing to The Elder Scrolls 6 taking place in Hammerfell. Its newly confirmed subtitle, Sentinel, shares its name with a major city in northwestern Hammerfell, overlooking the Iliac Bay. More importantly, Bethesda's November 3 reveal ends with a mysterious passage that explicitly references Hammerfell, lending considerable weight to last week's reports about the setting. For longtime fans, Hammerfell is an exciting change of scenery from Skyrim's snowy mountains. Located in western Tamriel, the province is the homeland of the Redguards, whose ancestors arrived from the lost continent of Yokuda. Its landscape ranges from the sprawling Alik'r Desert to rugged mountain ranges and coastal settlements. Hammerfell has previously appeared in The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard, and of course can be visited in The Elder Scrolls Online, although a modern single-player adventure could explore the region on an unprecedented scale. The province also has an especially complicated political history. Following the Great War, Hammerfell rejected the peace settlement with the Aldmeri Dominion and ultimately separated from the Empire. That history is a perfect backdrop for the sequel, especially if Bethesda revisits the political tensions established in Skyrim. However, the most intriguing part of the announcement concerns the Elder Scrolls themselves. The reveal video concludes with the following passage: "The scroll offered only a shimmer, a veil thinly lifted to my eyes. A future lost. A victory undone. Sands of time scattered by fate." — Yazar, Moth Priest of High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell (4E 206) Interestingly, the passage is dated 4E 206, five years after the events at the beginning of Skyrim, although this doesn't necessarily establish the sequel's timeline. Moth Priests are trained to interpret the Elder Scrolls, mysterious artifacts capable of revealing events across time, often at a terrible cost to their readers. While these objects have played important roles throughout the franchise, their origins and true nature remain largely unexplained. According to reports, The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel will finally explore the history of the Elder Scrolls themselves, potentially revealing secrets that have remained unanswered for decades. The teaser's references to lost futures and undone victories suggest that prophecy and changing destinies could play major roles in the upcoming story.
