FEARS are rising for women on an island in Greece after eight rapes were reported in 20 days. Giannakos added that a few days ago an Italian tourist needed specialised medical treatment to treat injuries that, according to her, were caused after rape. A statement from police said: “During the period from May to August 6, three incidents have been reported to our competent service, for which all procedures provided for by law were immediately followed, in cooperation with the prosecutor’s office, forensic and health authorities, and two arrests have been made.” Most read in The Sun This comes as two 18-year-old British women have accused a man in Zante of raping them. Both victims told police they were raped by the same man, according to local media outlet Ethnos. An urgent probe after the pair were taken to hospital to undergo medical examination. Upon hearing the horror allegations, the mother of one of the women immediately drove from the UK to Greece. She managed to track down the suspect to his place of work and attacked him, according to local media. Officers were called to the scene and the mother and suspect were both taken to the police station. The suspect has since been arrested on suspicion of rape with a case filed against him. Authorities are now investigating the complaints and the circumstances around the alleged incidents. In a separate case, two British sisters were allegedly raped by two UK tourist brothers in Rhodes. Greece has seen sexual violence cases increase sharply over the past 14 years, with police recording 1,250 offences in 2024 compared to just 511 in 2010, according to the latest Eurostat data. That marks a 145 per cent rise, one of the steeper climbs recorded across the European Union during the same period.
