PETERBOROUGH have sacked manager Luke Williams after a poor start to the season that has seen the League One outfit drop to the relegation zone. The League One team announced the “existing coaching staff” will take charge of the upcoming fixtures while club chiefs look for Williams’ permanent replacement. Peterborough announced: “Peterborough United Football Club has today parted company with First Team Manager Luke Williams. “On behalf of everyone at the Football Club, we would like to place on record our thanks to Luke for all his efforts during his time at the Weston Homes Stadium. This is not a decision the club has taken lightly. “However, the team’s form in Sky Bet League One has not matched the Board’s expectations, particularly given the significant investment made in the squad, and following today’s performance against Doncaster Rovers the Board felt it had no other choice but to make a change. “The club’s existing coaching staff will take charge of the first team squad while the Board considers its next steps.” And some Peterborough fans believe Darren, 54, – the man Williams replaced last October – will become the successor. Under Sir Alex‘s son, the club earned back-to-back promotions from League Two all the way up to the Championship in 2008 and 2009. Darren brought them back to the second division on two separate occasions in 2011 and 2021. And fans would love to see him back in the hopes of improving their clubs fortunes. One supporter tweeted: “Darren Ferguson is available I’ve heard.” Another commented: “If Fergie comes back ima loose my s***.” A third wrote: “Here he [Darren] comes!” This fan said: “Go and get Darren Ferguson!” That one added: “It’s been more than a year since Fergie was the manager. Just sayin’.” ‘Absolutely no chance’ And a comment read: “Darren Ferguson incoming…” However, the possibility of another reunion with Darren appears unlikely after his recent statement regarding a “silly” fifth stint. The Scot said last month there is “absolutely no chance” he will work at Weston Homes Stadium again. Darren told talkSPORT: “I’m not going to go back, absolutely no chance. “I’ve been there four times now, it would just get silly if I’m going to be honest. “[Peterborough majority shareholder] Darragh [MacAnthony] and I haven’t really spoken since I was sacked.
