EFL club buys one million BRICKS salvaged from historic hospital to build £3billion new £62,000-seater superstadium

BIRMINGHAM have bought ONE MILLION bricks from a historic former hospital to help build their new £3billion stadium. The Blues are on their way to a major stadium move from their 29,400 St Andrew’s stadium to a stunning new 62,000-seater ground. The club bought one million bricks from the former Birmingham City Hospital which stood for more than 130 years before its closure in 2024. The bricks, which have been cleaned by specialists, will have a record of how they were manufactured, stored and transported documented and displayed as part of the new development. Developers say the bricks will help to build the twelve brick chimney-style towers planned to reference Birmingham’s industrial heritage at the Powerhouse Stadium. City Hospital first opened its doors in the late 19th century when it was known as Birmingham Workhouse Infirmary using bricks produced at Adderley Park Brickworks. The site was renamed Dudley Road Hospital in 1912, before it became part of the newly-established NHS in 1948. Birmingham’s new ground, which has an aim of being completed by 2030, will be located on a 48-acre plot of land in Bordesley Green, East Birmingham. The club unveiled pictures for their ambitious plans for the new stadium last year. Club owner Tom Wagner said at the time: “This is a huge milestone for Birmingham City – creating a home for the club that reflects our ambition to compete at the highest level. “More than that, the iconic design is a statement of intent for the City of Birmingham and the West Midlands, testament to a region that is on the rise.
