EDERSON remains baffled as to why his Manchester United transfer collapsed, claiming his medical “went well”. United came close to signing the Brazil midfielder earlier this summer for around £35million, even bringing the 27-year-old over to England to undergo physical tests. United have since signed compatriot Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in central midfield, and are closing in on Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, all for a combined £150m. Meanwhile Ederson has since signed a new contract with Atalanta and spoke about his eventful summer ahead of the Italians’ Conference League play-off with Hapoel Tel-Aviv. He said: “I honestly don’t know what happened. I always had interest from other clubs, and I could’ve gone to another English side. “The tests went well, I don’t know what changed. I’ve been with Atalanta for four years and always played. “I could’ve just waited to see what happened, but the great rapport with the club convinced me to stay and sign a new contract.” Ederson had long been on United’s radar as they looked to replace fellow Brazil star Casemiro, who left for Inter Miami this summer. A fee was agreed on June 2 to sign him from Atalanta and he had initial tests in the United States, where he was competing in the World Cup with his country. The Red Devils moved instead for Santos, 22, from Chelsea in a deal with £48m and Tielemans, 29, for £35m. United are expected to complete the £65m capture of Baleba, 22, from Brighton in the coming days. Ederson added: “I had lovely moments going to the World Cup with Brazil, and then… I still don’t know what happened to be honest. “But the important thing is that I was able to deal with the situation, return with the right mentality and give my all to the club that gave me so much. “I am still Ederson, everyone knows me here and what I can do, they know I will always give my all.” The midfielder appears to have moved on from his failed switch quickly, and is in line to get the armband with Atlanta, whom he joined in 2022 from Salernitana. Ederson added: “I am very happy to remain with Atalanta, I really thank the club and (CEO) Luca Percassi. “They called me many times, I felt they were by my side, but even though I had interest from other clubs, after everything that happened, I thought it was best to stick with who really wanted me, and that was always Atalanta. “I was happy to wear the jersey that has given me so much joy.” Comment now
