Ed Sheeran cancels tour shows hours before start in ‘difficult decision’

The singer was due to perform at the Foxborough, Massachusetts, stadium tonight and tomorrow, continuing his Loop Tour after rapper Macklemore was removed as an opening act. However, it’s now been confirmed the gigs will not go ahead because of bad weather. In a statement, Messina Touring announced: ‘Due to the severe weather warnings in place in Boston and New England throughout the weekend and following consultation with local officials, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Ed Sheeran concerts at Gillette Stadium. ‘The decision was made with the safety of fans, staff and everyone involved in the shows as the top priority.’ They added that refunds are available for ticket holders at their point of purchase or will be issued automatically if tickets were bought via Ticketmaster. A representative for businessman Kraft, chairman and chief executive officer of the Kraft Group, echoed the statement, adding to TMZ that ‘stadium and tour management, along with public safety officials, have been closely monitoring the weather forecast over the past week’. Insiders previously said that the approaching storm could jeopardise the back-to-back concerts, with stage construction halted yesterday. As reported by Fox Weather, the area is forecast for one to two inches of rain and 40mph winds. The cancellations come after a week of intense scrutiny for Sheeran, who was left without support acts or a backing band after all of them dropped out of the tour in solidarity with Macklemore and his ‘free Palestine’ message. Real name Ben Haggerty, the Same Love hitmaker had said long-time friend Sheeran was given an ultimatum by Kraft, ordering his removal from the tour, or else the Shape of You vocalist would not be allowed to play at Gillette Stadium.
